Gnostic Teaching on Baptism

Gnostic Teaching on Baptism

Baptism is one of the five Gnostic rituals

The master [did] everything in a mystery: baptism, chrism, eucharist, redemption, and bridal chamber. (The Gospel of Philip)

Is there more than one baptism?

Yes it appears that the ritual of  redemption is a second baptism

in the Valentinian Exposition it says that "The First baptism is the Forgiveness of sins" therefore there must be a second baptism if there is a first

2 and he said to them: Did you receive holy spirit when you became believers? They said to him: Why, we have never heard whether there is a holy spirit.
3 And he said: In what, then, were you baptized? They said: In John's baptism.
4 Paul said: John baptized with the baptism [in symbol] of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.
5 On hearing this, they got baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul laid his hands upon them, the holy spirit came upon them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying (Acts 19).

John's baptism is the baptism for the Forgiveness of sins

John baptised everyone intransitively. By this we mean they could not pass their baptism to others. However the 12 apostles could baptise transitively. By this we mean that anyone baptised by an apostle could himself baptise further disciples who could themselves baptise further disciples.

baptism is a cleansing of the conscience

1peter 3:21 That which corresponds to this is also now saving YOU, namely, baptism, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the request made to God for a good conscience,) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

What are the effects of the ritual of Baptism?

Baptism liberates the believer from Fate:

76 As, therefore, the birth of the Saviour released us from “becoming” and from Fate, so also his baptism rescued us from fire, and his Passion rescued us from passion in order that we might in all things follow him. For he who was baptised unto God advanced toward God and has received “power to walk upon scorpions and snakes,” the evil powers.

77 Therefore baptism is called death and an end of the old life when we take leave of the evil principalities, but it is also called life according to Christ, of which he is sole Lord

78 Until baptism, they say, Fate is real, but after it the astrologists are no longer right. But it is not only the washing that is liberating, but the knowledge of/who we were, and what we have become, where we were or where we were placed, whither we hasten, from what we are redeemed, what birth is and what rebirth.

Who can administer Baptism?

Anyone with Gnosis

baptism is to do with Christ and not the church.

Baptism
We are born again through the holy spirit, and we are conceived through Christ in baptism with two elements. We are anointed through the spirit, and when we were conceived, we were united.

No one can see oneself in the water or in a mirror without light, nor can you see yourself in the light without water or a mirror. So it is necessary to baptize with two elements, light and water, and light is chrism.

Truth, is like a light of pure knowledge, if it Burns you, it separates the darkness in you from you, if you are able to stand then you shall become as great as the light that the darkness has fled from.

Mirror:

In this a world a woman stands before a mirror to beautify herself, but the woman of gnosis takes the beauty within and glorify the reflection without.

Mr 1:4  John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
Lu 3:3  And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

Ac 13:24  When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
Ac 18:25  This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

Jesus was Begotten Three Times

Jesus was Begotten Three Times

Matthew 1:18 But the birth of Jesus Christ was in this way. During the time his mother Mary was promised in marriage to Joseph, she was found to be pregnant by holy spirit before they were united.

Matthew 1:20 But after he had thought these things over, look! The angel of Yahweh appeared to him in a dream, saying: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife home, for that which has been begotten in her is by holy spirit.

Luke 1:34 But Mary said to the angel: “How is this to be, since I am having no intercourse with a man?” 35 In answer the angel said to her: “Holy spirit will come upon you, and power of the Most High will overshadow you. For that reason also what is born will be called holy, God’s Son.

Matthew 3:16 When Jesus was immersed a bright light played upon the water, so that all who had come there were afraid. After his immersion, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon him.

Matthew 3:17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Luke 3:22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight."

Romans 1:3 Concerning his Son, who came from the seed of David according to the flesh;
4 Declared the Son of’ God in power, through the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, [even ]Jesus Christ our Lord;

In writings, to beget is to be begotten or to “produce”

Jesus was begotten three times the first by the holy spirit overshadowing Mary and this made Jesus Son of Man and Son of God this is the conception of Jesus. and the second at his baptism this is the quickening of Jesus. and the third is the birth of Jesus this happened after his resurrection from the dead. Notice that the Lord Jesus was "declared to be the Son of God with power . . . by the resurrection from the dead" (Rom. 1:4). His resurrection to life eternal constituted the seal of his Divine sonship.

1. He was born by the power of the Holy Spirit.....The power of GOD
2. He was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit......the power of GOD at his baptism
3. He was quickened by the Spirit at his resurrection......the power of GOD.

There are three stages in birth: conception, quickening, birth.

In pregnancy terms, quickening is the moment in pregnancy when the pregnant person starts to feel or perceive fetal movements in the uterus

Jesus is first born a child of flesh; he was then "born of water" by baptism; finally Jesus was  "born of the spirit" or changed into a spirit body (1 Cor. 15:44).

Every birth follows a threefold development: conception, quickening, birth.

As far as the birth of Spirit is concerned, a similar process takes place. Baptism denotes conception for it has been brought about by the spirit-word (Rom. 6:17); the development of the Christ-like life is the quickening for it is the outward manifestation of an inward conviction (Col. 1:27); and this shall be followed by the full birth of the resurrection when the successful candidate will be changed into spirit nature (1 Cor. 15:44,46,51-53; Phil. 2:10-14).

Don't forget, there were three manifestations of the Spirit in relation to Jesus. (1) at his birth. He was begotten "of the spirit" ..... therefore styled "holy". (2) at his baptism and (3) after his resurrection when he was made immortal, his body being changed from "flesh and blood" to "flesh and spirit". It's a deep and profound subject but the fact he was begotten of the Spirit of Yahweh made him of quick understanding and enabled him to be perfectly sinless throughout his life.

Matt 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

In Luke 3:22 Instead of “You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight,” one Greek ms and several Latin mss and church fathers (D it Ju [Cl] Meth Hil Aug) quote Ps 2:7 outright with “You are my Son; today I have fathered you.”

The Baptism of Jesus foreshadowed his death and resurrection.

Romans 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

after his resurrection from the dead he became light and this is the place where light came into being by its self in the Lord Jesus

Thus Jesus was begotten 3 times at his birth at his Baptism and at his Resurrection from the dead
