The Figure of Error in the Odes of Solomon

The Figure of Error in Odes of Solomon

First a reading from Ode 38
1 I went up to the light of truth as if into a chariot:
2 And the Truth took me and led me: and carried me across pits and gulleys; and from the rocks and the waves it preserved me:
3 And it became to me a haven of Salvation: and set me on the arms of immortal life:
4 And it went with me and made me rest, and suffered me not to wander, because it was the Truth;
5 And I ran no risk, because I walked with Him;
6 And I did not make an error in anything because I obeyed the Truth.
7 For Error flees away from it, and meets it not: but the Truth proceeds in the right path, and
8 Whatever I did not know, it made clear to me, all the poisons of error, and the plagues of death which they think to be sweetness:
9 And I saw the destroyer of destruction, when the bride who is corrupted is adorned: and the bridegroom who corrupts and is corrupted;
10 And I asked the Truth 'Who are these?'; and He said to me, 'This is the deceiver and the error:
11 And they are alike in the beloved and in his bride: and they lead astray and corrupt the whole world:
12 And they invite many to the banquet, p. 138
13 And give them to drink of the wine of their intoxication, and remove their wisdom and knowledge, and so they make them without intelligence;
14 And then they leave them; and then these go about like madmen corrupting: seeing that-they are without heart, nor do they seek for it!
15 And I was made wise so as not to fall into the hands of the deceiver; and I congratulated myself because the Truth went with me,
16 And I was established and lived and was redeemed,
17 And my foundations were laid on the hand of the Lord: because He established me.
18 For He set the root and watered it and fixed it and blessed it; and its fruits are for ever.
19 It struck deep and sprung up and spread out, and was full and enlarged;
20 And the Lord alone was glorified in His planting and in His husbandry: by His care and by the blessing of His lips,
21 By the beautiful planting of His right hand: and by the discovery of His planting, and by the thought of His mind. Hallelujah.

Now we have read Ode 38 of the Odes of Solomon let us look at the word Error in the Bible

Error in the Bible
05771 עון ‘avon aw-vone’ or עוון ‘avown (#2Ki 7:9; Ps 51:5) aw-vone’ this Hebrew word is normally translated 1) perversity, depravity, iniquity, guilt or punishment of iniquity 1a) iniquity 1b) guilt of iniquity, guilt (as great), guilt (of condition) 1c) consequence of or punishment for iniquity
However the new world translation (1983 edition) translates this Hebrew word 05771 עון ‘avon as Error the Watchtower writes this about the word 05771 עון ‘avon:

,`a·won´ is the Hebrew term most frequently linked with or used in parallel with chat·ta´th´ (sin, missing the mark)

Thus, `a·won´ basically relates to erring, acting crookedly or wrongly. The Hebrew term refers to a moral error or wrong, a distortion of what is right. (Job 10:6, 14, 15

The “error” (`awon´) may be intentional or unintentional, either a conscious deviation from what is right or an unknowing act, a “mistake” (shegha·ghah´), which, nevertheless, brings the person into error and guilt before God. (Le 4:13-35; 5:1-6, 14-19; Nu 15:22-29; Ps 19:12, 13) If intentional, then, of course, the error is of far graver consequence than if by mistake. (Nu 15:30, 31; compare La 4:6, 13, 22.)

Error is contrary to truth, and those willfully sinning pervert the truth, a course which only brings forth grosser sin. (Compare Isa 5:18-23.) The apostle Paul speaks of “the deceptive power of sin,” which has a hardening effect on human hearts. (Heb 3:13-15; compare Ex 9:27, 34, 35.)

In the Septuagint the Hebrew word 05771 עון ‘avon is translated by the word G4108 πλάνη plánē

Prov 14:8 ¶ The wisdom of the prudent will understand their ways; but the folly of fools leads astray. LXX

LXX Deut 29:19 Job 19:4 Job 35:13 Ec 5:6 Ec 10:5 Isa 19:14 Isa 30:28 Isa 32:6 Jer 4:11 Jer 23:17 Eze 44:13 Eze 48:11 Dan 6:4

G4108 πλάνη plánē, plan'-ay; feminine of G4108 (as abstractly); objectively, fraudulence; subjectively, a straying from orthodoxy or piety:—deceit, to deceive, delusion, error.

Thayer:
1) a wandering, a straying about
1a) one led astray from the right way, roams hither and thither
2) metaph.
2a) mental straying
2a1) error, wrong opinion relative to morals or religion
2b) error which shows itself in action, a wrong mode of acting
2c) error, that which leads into error, deceit or fraud

In the N. T. metaphorically, mental straying, i. e. error, wrong opinion relative to morals or religion Ephesians 4:14; 1 Thessalonians 2:3; 2 Thessalonians 2:11; 2 Peter 2:18; 2 Peter 3:17; 1 John 4:6; Jude 1:11

Error has a mental condition That which is untrue. Error thoughts represent belief in thoughts and beliefs not of God. Error thoughts have no foundation in Truth. They originate in the intellect. They are eliminated by one's denying their reality and power, and affirming the Truth of Being.

The Odes of Solomon
In the Odes of Solomon Error means to go astray, mislead, deceive, to be deluded, to forget in the Odes Error parallel to nothingness Ode 18:9,10 and linked to knowing Leading astray is characteristic of Error as her own going astray Ode 31:2 Death is parallel to error Ode 15:6-9 Ode 42:11

Ode 15:6 I repudiated the way of error, and went towards Him and received salvation from Him abundantly.

ode 18

10 And You know not error; because neither does it know You.
11 And ignorance appeared like dust, and like the foam of the sea.
12 And vain people thought that it was great, and they became like its type and were impoverished.
13 But those who knew understood and contemplated, and were not polluted by their thoughts;
14 Because they were in the mind of the Most High, and mocked those who were walking in error.
15 Then they spoke the truth, from the breath which the Most High breathed into them.
Praise and great honor to His name.
Hallelujah.

Now with Ode 18 I have noticed a similarity with the Gospel of Truth in Ode 18 ignorance (which is linked to error in verse 10 and 14) appears "like dust and like the foam of the sea", and in the Gospel of Truth ignorance became dense like a fog. I think "dust like the foam of the sea" is a good description of fog

Acquaintance and ignorance The gospel of truth is joy for those who have received from the Father of truth the grace of knowing him, through the power of the Word that came forth from the pleroma, the one who is in the thought and the mind of the Father, that is, the one who is addressed as 'the Savior', (that) being the name of the work he is to perform for the redemption of those who were ignorant of the Father, while in the name of the gospel is the proclamation of hope, being discovery for those who search for him.

When the totality went about searching for the one from whom they had come forth - and the totality was inside of him, the incomprehensible, inconceivable one who is superior to every thought - ignorance of the Father brought about anguish and terror; and the anguish grew solid like a fog, so that no one was able to see. For this reason, error became powerful; it worked on its own matter foolishly, not having known the truth. It set about with a creation, preparing with power and beauty the substitute for the truth.

Acquaintance is gnosis Un-acquaintance is a lack of gnosis or "deficiency" lack is destroyed by the advent of gnosis.

the terms "error" and "lack" are used interchangeably in the Gospel of Truth

ignorance (Un-acquaintance) of the Father brought about Error through anxiety and fear

Ode 18
1 My heart was lifted up and enriched in the love of the Most High, so that I might praise Him with my name.
2 My members were strengthened, that they may not fall from His power.
3 Infirmities fled from my body, and it stood firm for the Lord by His will; because His kingdom is firm.
4 O Lord, for the sake of those who are in need, do not dismiss Your Word from me.
5 Nor, for the sake of their works, withhold Your perfection from me.
6 Let not light be conquered by darkness, nor let truth flee from falsehood.
7 Let Your right hand set our salvation to victory, and let it receive from every region, and preserve it on the side of everyone who is besieged by misfortunes.
8 You are my God, falsehood and death are not in Your mouth; only perfection is Your will.
9 And vanity You know not, because neither does it know You.

Fog is a visible aerosol consisting of tiny water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the air at or near the Earth's surface.

And ignorance appeared like dust, and like the foam of the sea.
And vain people thought that it was great, and they became like its type and were impoverished.

This ignorance of the father brought about terror and fear. And terror became dense like a fog, so no one was able to see. Because of this, error became strong. But she worked on her material substance vainly, because she did not know the truth. She assumed a fashioned figure while she was preparing, in power and in beauty, the substitute for truth.

Error in the Gospel of Truth is not set in the primordial past, as for instance in the Apocryphon of John, but in the time of Jesus’ earthly mission and in the present time of the community

The personification of error represents the "state of consciousness of the Jewish Sanhedrin and the Roman authorities " For this reason error was angry with him, so she persecuted him. She was distressed by him, and she was made powerless. He was nailed to a tree."(Gospel of Truth 18:16-18).

Error is simultaneously a symbolic designation for the group of people that persecuted Jesus and a description of their mental state.

I have found a paraphrase translation of the Gospel of Truth which best explains this:

Ignorance of the Source of Life generates anguish and fear, which are like a fog clouding mortal vision so that mankind cannot perceive the realities of their existence. This is the reason Error is powerful. It has generated its own world, a world of illusions and falsehoods, in which mortal mind is trapped, unable to see the Divine Reality which is beyond those illusions. Error's illusions are often beautiful and desirable to mortal mind, but in the end they melt like the mists they are, and those who embrace them as their reality are left with only darkness in their place. The evils of mortal existence do not reflect the nature of the Parents. They take nothing from Divine perfection, for it has no part in them. The Parents are the Source of all Good, all Light, all Life. That which is not of these flows from Error's illusions. (A paraphrase of the Gospel of Truth: Truths Good News Church of the Pearl)

In the Odes of Solomon and the Gospel of Truth, Error is a personified power opposed to God. Error has characteristics of the human condition 31:25; 32:35

Ode 31:1 Chasms vanished before the Lord, and darkness dissipated before His appearance.
2 Error erred (Error went astray) and perished on account of Him; and contempt received no path, for it was submerged by the truth of the Lord.

Since error is frequently linked with or used in parallel with sin in the Bible it would be logical to conclude in the Odes of Solomon that error is equivalent to sin

Ode 31 a song of triumph sung by the church this Ode represents the victory of christ over sin and death :

Ode 31:1 The abysses [world's religious systems] were dissolved [the Old Covenant and its institutionalized way of things passed away] before the Lord [with the New Covenant]: and darkness [ignorance] was destroyed by His appearance [leaving no excuse]:
2 Error went astray [and tried to kill Him] and perished at His hand [by His power to overcome death]: and folly found no path to walk in [when the physical temple fell these were in great confusion], and was submerged [brought low] by the truth of the Lord [the hidden higher/inward (spiritual) meaning of the Word].

Again this Ode can be linked to the Error of the Gospel of Truth

Jesus the anointed. Through him he enlightened those who were in darkness because of forgetfulness. He enlightened them and gave them a path. And that path is the truth that he taught them. For this reason error was angry with him, so she persecuted him. She was distressed by him, and she was made powerless. He was nailed to a tree. (the Gospel of Truth)

(the Gospel of Truth) Error was upset, not knowing what to do; it was grieved, in mourning, afflicting itself because it knew nothing. When knowledge drew near it - this is the downfall of (error) and all its emanations - error is empty, having nothing inside. Truth appeared; all its emanations knew it. (Ode 18: Because they were in the mind of the Most High, and mocked those who were walking in error.)

Error hates him because he redeems those who are enmeshed in its chains. Error persecuted him but could not overcome him. It tried to destroy him, but its own state of nothingness was manifested in the attempt. He was nailed to a tree; he became a fruit of divine gnosis, (A paraphrase of the Gospel of Truth: Truths Good News Church of the Pearl)
Ode 38

And He went with me and caused me to rest and did not allow me to err; because He was and is the Truth.
And there was no danger for me because I constantly walked with Him; and I did not err in anything because I obeyed Him.
For Error fled from Him, and never met Him.
But Truth was proceeding on the upright way, and whatever I did not understand He exhibited to me:
All the poisons of error, and pains of death which are considered sweetness.
And the corrupting of the Corruptor, I saw when the bride who was corrupting was adorned, and the bridegroom who corrupts and is corrupted.
And I asked the Truth, Who are these? And He said to me: This is the Deceiver and the Error.
And they imitate the Beloved and His Bride, and they cause the world to err and corrupt it.
And they invite many to the wedding feast, and allow them to drink the wine of their intoxication;
So they cause them to vomit up their wisdom and their knowledge, and prepare for them mindlessness.
Then they abandon them; and so they stumble about like mad and corrupted men.
Since there is no understanding in them, neither do they seek it.
But I have been made wise so as not to fall into the hands of the Deceivers, and I myself rejoiced because the Truth had gone with me.
Ode 38 can be compared with Revelation 17 the Beast and the Harlot of Revelation 17 is the Deceiver and Error who resemble the Beloved and his bride. The beloved is Christ and his bride is the church. The counterfeits are the Antichrist (The Pope or papacy) and the harlot woman (the roman catholic church) Rev 17:4
The deceiver and Error are both personifications in Ode 38 of the Antichrist the Pope and the Roman Catholic system

[the word of error found in religious systems];

The feminine error is paired with the masculine deceiver this is the architect of all deception and his companion is Illusion (the illusory self)

and the false " Bride." These appear to mean the parody, or false image, or evil antitype, of the union that should join the true "Bridegroom" with the true "Bride" (Ode 38:69)

The passage in Ode 38:9 14 repeatedly mentions "corrupt" in various forms the Bride that is "corrupted" the Bridegroom that "corrupts and is corrupted" and then others who go about "corrupting."

we are told that the teachers of error operate upon their victims with intoxicating wine (Revelation 17:2) ; and the suggestion arises that the deadly poison has been introduced into the wine (false doctrine), and that the wine thus drugged has been sweetened with honey

The Antichrist is the bridegroom who corrupts and is corrupted ode 38:9 the Deceiver ode:38:10; 2 john 7 and his ally is error typified by the harlot gaily adorned. Christ with his church which is truth and Anitchrist with his companion error

They invite many to the wedding feast, and allow them to drink the wine of their intoxication rev 17:3 17:2 Gospel of Thomas saying 28

Who is the Deceiver? The Deceiver is a personification of sin. Sin is a deceiver (Rom. 7:11).

Human nature is the devil of the Bible, and is a great deceiver (see Heb. 2:14; 1 John 3:8; Rom. 7:11; Mark 7:20-23). Moreover, it is manifested in many forms. It can relate to the lust of the flesh, denote a person who incites to evil, describe a government, or an organisation, opposed to the truth, and so forth.
Sin, as the great deceiver of mankind, is there well spoken of as the Liar, the Accuser, the
Slanderer of God—alias the Devil. In its literal aspect, it is, of course, an impersonal thing,
tempting without being a conscious tempter, as expressed by James. "Every man is tempted
when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed; then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth

forth sin: and sin when it is finished bringeth forth death" (James 1:14).

1 I went up to [believed in and accepted] the light of truth [Christ] as if into a chariot [a vessel of (spiritual) war]:
2 And the Truth took me and led me [into more Truth]: and carried me across pits [falsehoods of religion] and gulleys [persecutions - "the shadow of death"]; and from the rocks [governments] and the waves [agitated or raging thoughts of political winds] it [Truth] preserved me:
3 And it [Truth] became to me a haven of Salvation [it set me free]: and set me [established me that I put my trust in] on the arms of immortal life [as opposed to "the arm of flesh"]:
4 And it went with me and made me rest [from my own works], and suffered me not to wander [out of the Way] because it was the Truth [and once you have it, you cannot away with it only throw it to the ground].
5 And I ran no risk [of failure], because I walked with Him [obeyed His Commandments];
5 And I did not make an error for anything [did not allow any errant thoughts to take hold of me] because I obeyed the Truth [which discovers our sins for us and helps us destroy them].
7 For Error [errant thoughts and intents] flees away from it [Truth] and meets it not: but the Truth proceeds in the right path [regardless of being surrounded by Error], and
8 What ever I did not know [in my ignorance in the flesh], it made clear to me [in the spirit of Truth], all the poisons [bitter waters] of error [the lower/outward (fleshly) forms (traditions, ordinances etc.) of religion, government], and the plagues of death [caused by the errant word ("the letter which kills") and has been the basis for unjust wars and killing for almost six thousand years] which they [the religious leaders and their adherents] think to be sweetness [sweet waters - they believe that they are doing a service to God and country]:
9 And I saw the destroyer of destruction [the Messiah], when the [Errant] bride [religion] who is corrupted is adorned [by the world as though she is in incorruption]: and the bridgegroom [the Antichrist, the Pope] who corrupts and is corrupted [from the beginning of her ways (as are all religions)];
10 And I asked the Truth, 'Who are these?'; and He said to me, 'This is the deceiver [the Antichrist, the Pope] and the error ["the mother of harlots" (Rev 17:5) and her daughters - the apostate churches of Christendom from Rome downwards]:
11 And they [the religious leaders] are alike in the beloved and in his bride [his ministers also "transform themselves into angels of light"]: and they lead astray [captive] and corrupt the whole world [under Roman Catholic Cult Laws even unto this day]:
12 And they invite many to the banquet [to eat of their poisoned food],
13 And give them to drink of the [worldly] wine of their intoxication [ignorant stupor], and remove their [ability to acquire] wisdom and knowledge, and so they make them without [spiritual] intelligence [these are clearly spoken of in Isaiah];
14 And then they leave them [to their own devices]; and then these go about like madmen corrupting [this is quite evident in how the rulers of the world are acting today]: seeing that they are with out heart [they have no love in them], nor do they seek for it [they only seek power and glory in the world].'
15 And I was made wise so as not to fall into the hands [under the power] of the deceiver; and I congratulated myself because the Truth went with me,
16 And I was established [in faith] and lived and was redeemed,
17 And my foundations [my conscious/subconscious mind and heart (soul)] were laid on [handed over to] the hand [power of] of the Lord: because He established me [by Grace].
18 For He set the root [the foundation of faith of the True Vine] and watered it [with the Words of Life] and fixed it [removed any spots from the world] and blessed it; and its fruits [of Righteousness] are for ever.
19 It [the root] struck deep [into the hearts of man] and sprung up [within them] and spread out [through their testimony] and was full and enlarged [filled the whole earth];
20 And the Lord alone was glorified in His planting [the Vine] and in His husbandry [the branches]: by His care and by the blessing of His lips,
21 By the beautiful planting of His right hand [the Power in Messiah]: and by the discovery of His planting [by those who found Him (or the lost sheep that He found!)], and by the thought of His mind [which they are being conformed to]. Hallelujah.

The Ode 38 above discussed describes the soul as going up to the region of Truth. Its meaning may be illustrated from another Ode which regards the soul not as going up above, but as being above: (34:4 5) "Whosoever is surrounded on every side by beauty in him there is nothing that is divided [against itself]. The pattern of that which is below is that which is above. For everything soever is above. Below is nothing soever. But it merely seems to be [seems] to those who have no knowledge."

The Aeons in the Odes of Solomon

Aeon in the Odes of Solomon

Ode 7
A wonderfully, simple and joyful psalm on the Incarnation.
  1. As is the course of anger over wickedness, so is the course of joy over the Beloved; and brings in of its fruits unhindered.
  2. My joy is the Lord and my course is towards Him, this path of mine is beautiful.
  3. For there is a Helper for me, the Lord. He has generously shown Himself to me in His simplicity, because His kindness has diminished His dreadfulness.
  4. He became like me, that I might receive Him. In form He was considered like me, that I might put Him on.
  5. And I trembled not when I saw Him, because He was gracious to me.
  6. Like my nature He became, that I might understand Him. And like my form, that I might not turn away from Him.
  7. The Father of knowledge is the Word of knowledge.
  8. He who created wisdom is wiser than His works.
  9. And He who created me when yet I was not knew what I would do when I came into being.
  10. On account of this He was gracious to me in His abundant grace, and allowed me to ask from Him and to benefit from His sacrifice.
  11. For He it is who is incorrupt, the perfection of the worlds and their Father.
  12. He has allowed Him to appear to them that are His own; in order that they may recognize Him that made them, and not suppose that they came of themselves.
  13. For towards knowledge He has set His way, he has widened it and lengthened it and brought it to complete perfection.
  14. And has set over it the traces of His light, and it proceeded from the beginning until the end.
  15. For by Him He was served, and He was pleased by the Son.
  16. And because of his salvation He will possess everything. And the Most High will be known by His holy ones:
  17. To announce to those who have songs of the coming of the Lord, that they may go forth to meet Him and may sing to Him, with joy and with the harp of many tones.
  18. The Seers shall go before Him, and they shall be seen before Him.
  19. And they shall praise the Lord in His love, because He is near and does see.
  20. And hatred shall be removed from the earth, and with jealousy it shall be drowned.
  21. For ignorance was destroyed upon it, because the knowledge of the Lord arrived upon it.
  22. Let the singers sing the grace of the Lord Most High, and let them bring their songs.
  23. And let their heart be like the day, and their gentle voices like the majestic beauty of the Lord.
  24. And let there not be anyone who breathes that is without knowledge or voice.
  25. For He gave a mouth to His creation: to open the voice of the mouth towards Him, and to praise Him.
  26. Confess His power and declare His grace.
    Hallelujah.
knowledge and joy
the whole Ode implies that "knowledge" must not come to us without "joy,":

Ode 7:1 As is the course of anger over wickedness, so is the course of joy over the Beloved; and brings in of its fruits unhindered.

wisdom and the word are with God in heaven:

Ode 7:7 "The Father of knowledge is the Word of knowledge. He who created wisdom is wiser than His works.."

wisdom one of the seven spirits of perfection

from the God of knowledge comes all that is and will be (1QS III,15)

the Father is wiser than his works and superior to all wisdom:

Ode 28:20 For the thought of the Most High cannot be anticipated; and His heart is superior to all wisdom.

The Father of the Aeons
Ode 7:11 "Because He it is that is incorrupt, the fulness of the ages and the Father of them."

Odes of Solomon 7:11 Because he is, he is imperishable the pleroma of the Aeons and their Father. Michael Lattke translation.

7:11 For He it is who is incorrupt, the perfection of the worlds and their Father. James Charlesworth translation

"The Fulness of the aeons and their Father.

ode 16:19 And the worlds (Aeons) are by His Word, and by the thought of His heart.

God is the Father of the Aeons because they emanated from him

The Aeons are not eternal they have a beginning and a Father. The Aeons can refer to the hidden and infinite past

Psalm 77:5 NWT I have thought upon the days of long ago,
On the years in the indefinite past.

Heb 11:3 New Heart English Bible

By faith, we understand that the ages were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible.

Rev. 15:3 American Standard Version

And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, O Lord God, the Almighty; righteous and true are thy ways, thou King of the ages. ("King of the aeons" )
"The Father of the Aeons", there exists high up in invisible and ineffable regions a perfect Aeon, pre-existent [to all]... and this they call Propator (i.e. Pre-existent-Father)

The Aeons are faithful believers
Ode 12
He has filled me with words of truth, that I may proclaim Him.
And like the flowing of waters, truth flows from my mouth, and my lips declare His fruits.
And He has caused His knowledge to abound in me, because the mouth of the Lord is the true Word, and the entrance of His light.
And the Most High has given Him to His generations
(Aeons), which are the interpreters of His beauty, [the Key of Knowledge found within His Word]

And the narrators of His glory,
And the confessors of His purpose,
And the preachers of His mind,
And the teachers of His works.
For the subtlety of the Word is inexpressible [in its lower/outward (fleshly) meaning], and like His utterance so also is His swiftness and His acuteness, for limitless is His progression.
He never falls but remains standing, and one cannot comprehend His descent or His way.
For as His work is, so is His expectation, for He is the light and dawning of thought.
And by Him the generations (Aeons)spoke to one another, and those that were silent acquired speech. [Blessed are they who by means thereof have understood everything, and have known the Lord in His truth]

ode 19 Then She gave the mixture to the generation without their knowing, and those who have received it are in the perfection of the right hand.

IGNATIUS to the Ephesians CHAPTER 19
19:1 And hidden from the prince of this world were the virginity of Mary and her child-bearing and likewise also the death of the Lord -- three mysteries to be cried aloud -- the which were wrought in the silence of God.
19:2 How then were they made manifest to the ages (Aeons)?A star shone forth in the heaven above all the stars; and its light was unutterable, and its strangeness caused amazement; and all the rest of the constellations with the sun and moon formed themselves into a chorus about the star; but the star itself far outshone them all; and there was perplexity to know whence came this strange appearance which was so unlike them.
19:3 From that time forward every sorcery and every spell was dissolved, the ignorance of wickedness vanished away, the ancient kingdom was pulled down, when God appeared in the likeness of man unto _newness of_ everlasting _life;_ and that which had been perfected in the counsels of God began to take effect. Thence all things were perturbed, because the abolishing of death was taken in hand

In Scripture, the Heb. word rendered by LXX aeon is perhaps best explained as meaning originally (Gesen. 761 V) "hidden," and hence (i) the hidden and infinite past, (2) the hidden and infinite future

The Aeons are personified in the Odes the generations of [past] aeons (Ode 12:4, 8) are represents as, some of them, "speaking" while others are "silent." The generations are past aeons of believers the Elect. They speak to each other by the word, the prophetic messages of the scriptures

and the Father is actively carrying out His Thought of Redemption, by the Word, through the aeons, and not as the mere object of a contemplative

The Patriarchs were called Fathers of the Age." or the The Leader of the Age (or, World),  "the days of the Fathers of the Age (or, World}."

Philo speaks of "aeon" as being in the life of God what "time" is in the life of Man. Time is measured by material motion, but aeon by immaterial or spiritual motion. Spiritual motion can only be conceived of, by us men, as "Thought". It is God's Thought. God's Thought as is reiterated throughout the Odes is a Thought, Plan, or Design, of Redemption for Man. This Thought was revealed by God's Word or Son moving and expressing Himself in the sons of Man, more especially in Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. These three Philo calls "measures of aeon," that is to say, phases of God s Thought of Redemption as it was developed through Faith, Joy, and Righteousness

For him the heroes of Israel are incarnate thoughts of God. His series of illustrations is a picture-book of the progressive phases of God's foreordained redemptive Purpose expressed in human beings. It represents spiritual lives (which are, as Philo says, "measures of aeon 1"],

Philo says (i. 277) that "time," xpuvos, being measured by the motions of the material Cosmos, may be called son of Cosmos, but only the grandson (not the son) of God, who is the Father of Cosmos. Aeon, he says, is the archetype of Time. We might be disposed to say that it must be measured by the motions of God's Thought; but he thinks of God's Thought as never past or future but always present: (id.) "In aeon, nothing has passed away, nothing is future, but everything simply subsists." The Hebrew view is that God combines past, present, and future, in a motion that is also rest. Elsewhere Philo says that the race of Wisdom produced (i. 455) "the threefold fruits of him that seeth, [namely], Israel." These are "Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob," and he calls these three "measures of aeon" i.e. apparently of divine Time. According to Philo (i. 342), "aeonian" does not mean "infinite in time" but "He that is graciously giving (6 x n P l C"f Ji(l "^--- always and continuously...," in other words, "infinite in His scope of graciousness," so that no limit of space, time, or thought, can be attached to it.

The Jews believed that all through the generations, from Adam to Abraham, God was waiting for the latter that He might begin to build His Habitation. Before Abraham, all was swamp. When he came, the rock rose to the surface, and building became possible. In effect, the Building was begun when Abraham "believed."

When Abraham "believed." Nothing outward and visible took place then. But inwardly and invisibly a new spiritual period began, the period, or age (aeon), of "belief." Such an age is not measured by days or years or by "time" at all. For time depends on material, acoti on spiritual, motion

With Abraham began the aeon of Faith.

Then after the aeon of Joy typified by Isaac, and the aeon of Hopeful Endurance typified by Jacob, and after the silent aeons of the Egyptian oppression during which the patriarchal seed was being prepared to grow up into the tree of national life came Moses
The New Aeon
Ode 22
11 Incorruptible was Your way and Your face; You have brought Your world (Aeons) to corruption, that everything might be resolved and renewed.
12 And the foundation of everything is Your rock. And upon it You have built Your kingdom, and it became the dwelling-place of the holy ones.
Hallelujah.

Ode 8:22 And you shall be found incorrupt in all ages, on account of the name of your Father.
Hallelujah.

Ode 8:22 "Ye shall be found incorruptible in all the aeons to the Name of your Father."

It is God that is incorruptible, the fulness of the aeons and the Father of them"  The meaning is that, in the end of all the aeons, the Incorruptible Father of all the aeons will have kept His Promise to His human children that they should be conformed to His incorruptible nature.

God has Breasts El Shaddai

The Breasts of the Father Ode 19

In this study we will look at the feminine aspects of God but first we will start with an opening reading from the Odes of Solomon Ode 19:

Ode 19
A cup of milk was offered to me, and I drank it in the sweetness of the Lord's kindness.
The Son is the cup, and the Father is He who was milked; and the Holy Spirit is She who milked Him;
Because His breasts were full, and it was undesirable that His milk should be ineffectually released.
The Holy Spirit opened Her bosom, and mixed the milk of the two breasts of the Father.
Then She gave the mixture to the generation without their knowing, and those who have received it are in the perfection of the right hand.
The womb of the Virgin took it, and she received conception and gave birth.
So the Virgin became a mother with great mercies.
And she labored and bore the Son but without pain, because it did not occur without purpose.
And she did not require a midwife, because He caused her to give life.
She brought forth like a strong man with desire, and she bore according to the manifestation, and she acquired according to the Great Power.
And she loved with redemption, and guarded with kindness, and declared with grandeur.
Hallelujah.

The teaching that the Father has feminine breasts might seem shocking at first but if we look deeper into this we will find that this is very common among early church writings

Church Father: Irenæus, bishop of Lyons from 178-ca. 200 ce wrote in his major work Against Heresies, "Those who do not have a share in the Spirit are not nourished to life by the Mother's breasts." (Irenæus, Against Heresies (Adversus Omnes Hæreses), book 3, ch. 24:1; in Stramara, 'El Shaddai ...' ibid., p. 7)

Clement of Alexandria is perhaps the best known patristic author in this regard, with his use of images of mothering and nurturing—but no common development akin to the Syriac tradition of the feminine Spirit took place.

Elaine Pagels writes:

Clement characterizes God in feminine as well as masculine terms:

The Word is everything to the child, both father and mother, teacher and nurse . . . The nutriment is the milk of the Father . . . and the Word alone supplies us children with the milk of love, and only those who suck at this breast are truly happy.  For this reason, seeking is called sucking; to those infants who seek the Word, the Father's loving breasts supply milk.

One can recall Jerome's admonition that the word for Spirit is feminine in Hebrew, masculine in Latin, and neuter in Greek, instructing us that God is without gender. But Jerome's comment may well indicate that debate on this matter was taking place.
El Shaddai
The idea that God has breasts comes from the Hebrew word El Shaddai:

The main Hebrew lexicons, Brown-Driver-Briggs (BDB) and The Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament (HALOT, also known as K-B for its editors, Kohler and Baumgartner), both offer various possibilities for the etymology of the word shaddai. One possibility is that it derives from the verb שדד shadad. שדד shadad means “to deal violently with,” but none of the lexicons or theological word books suggest that shaddai means “God of violence.” Another possibility, found only in BDB, is that the name comes from שדה shadah , which means “to pour out,” and refers to God as “rain giver.” The Kohler-Baumgartner lexicon (HALOT) suggests that the word could be based on the Akkadian shadu which means “mountain.” Thus, El Shaddai means “The God of the mountain(s).” This seems to be the current favorite among scholars. HALOT also suggests another possibility, such as the idea that El Shaddai refers to one of the ancestral gods, but the meaning of the name is uncertain.

One possibility that is not mentioned in either BDB or HALOT is found in both the Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament (TDOT) and also in the New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology and Exegesis (NIDOTTE). And that is that the name Shaddai comes from the word thdw/y which means “breast” (or “mountain.”) (See TDOT, I:257; NIDOTTE, I:401). Although TDOT concludes that “God of the mountain” is the best translation, the fact that it recognizes “The God of Breasts” as a possibility is significant.

In Hebrew the word שד shad means “breast.” The noun itself is masculine in form even though it refers only to female breasts. TDOT notes that shaddai follows a common pattern for divine name formation using a “natural element plus an adjectival suffix. One thinks of ‘Artsay, Tallay, and Pidray, wives of Ba`al whose names mean “One of the Earth,” “The Dewy One,” and “the Misty One” (TDOT, I:256). Thus Shaddai would mean “The Breasted One.” [1]

The etymology of El Shaddai remains uncertain and contested. As HALOT concludes, “Despite several attempted and suggested explanations the etymology of שדי has still not been completely clarified” (II:1421). For this reason, we should not dismiss possibilities like “The God of Breasts” simply because some scholars have come to an admittedly uncertain consensus on “God of the Mountain(s).”

El Shaddai literally translated means the strong breasted one

He provided for the people of Israel when He "led" them in the wilderness (Deut. 32:10 12). It was He that (Exod. 20:2) "led" them out of Egypt. He, also, said to Abraham (Gen. xvii. i 2) "I am thy God (Heb. El Shaddai), be-well-pleasing before me." Thus, "in the manner of a true Child-leader, He secretly fashions Abraham so as to be a faithful" a remark that would seem more to the point if we could suppose that Clement had some vague notions about "Shaddai" as being connected with the All-sufficing Father, and perhaps with "breasts."

Compare the early Jewish interpretation of the Abrahamic title of God, Shaddai the All-sufficer

El Shaddai All-Sufficient Sustainer

God is One Person but there is a dual aspect to God's nature the Deity is both Father and Mother The very name God, Almighty, in its original Hebrew form El Shaddai, reveals the infinite quality. El, God, its first meaning, Strength: Shaddi, the plural whose singular, Shad, signifies a Breast and is feminine. Our natural father and mother, with their united strength and wisdom, truth and love are types of that Perfect Parentage, our Father and Mother which are in Heaven

The duality of God is expressed in the book of "Genesis" as follows: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. So God created man in his own image; male and female created He them; and called their name Adam."
Ode 19
Ode 8 "My own breasts did I prepare for them" This indicates a recognition of Christ as Mother

In Ode 8, Christ too is the nursing mother: "I fashioned their limbs/ and my own breasts I prepared for them/ that they might drink my holy milk and live by it." (8:14)

Odes (19:2 foil.) while continuing to represent God, and not man, as the Giver of the Milk, mentions also the Holy Spirit (whom the poet ventures to describe as "milking" the Father "because His breasts were full ") and the Son apparently the pre-incarnate Son whom he has previously (ib. 2) called "the Cup." Afterwards (ib. 6) the Ode goes on to speak of the Virgin as "becoming a Mother."

In Ode 19 it is not a male chest (Rev 1:13) the author bestows a mother's breast on the Father

The Father is imaged in wholly feminine terms: nursing from his breasts, and midwife at Mary's birthgiving.

Again, the images for God in this Ode recall certain Old Testament metaphors: God as midwife in Ps 22:9-10, God as comforting mother in Isa 49:15 and 66:13, and God travailing in the throes of divine labor pangs in Isa 42:14b.

Almost the only mention of "mother" in the Odes is (35:6) "I was carried like a child by his mother, and the dew of the Lord gave me milk" (comp. 35:i "The dew of the Lord... hath He distilled upon me").

The Son is the cup, and He who was milked is the Father^ 19:4 "...the milk from the two breasts of the Father."

"Milk," on the other hand, they frequently mention, and even as coming from the "breasts" of the Father
Medieval Christian Mystics
Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) (Cistercian) Sermon to prelates Show affection as a mother would, correct like a father. Be gentle, avoid harshness, do not resort to blows, expose your breasts: let your bosoms swell with milk, not swell with passion. ... Why will the young man, bitten by the serpent, shy away from the judgment of the priest, to whom he ought to run as to the bosom of a mother?(42)212

Guerric of Igny (Cistercian) [Christ] is a father in virtue of natural creation ... and authority. ... He is a mother too in the mildness of his affection, and a nurse. ... The Holy Spirit (is) like milk poured out from Christ's own breasts.(39)

Clare (1194-1253) --Clare's dream The Lady Clare also told that once she had seen St. Francis in a vision and she was bringing him a jug of hot water and a towel for wiping his hands and with this she was ascending a long stairway, but so easily that it was as though she walked on the level earth. When she reached St. Francis, he bared his breast, saying "Come, take and drink." And she did so. Then St. Francis bid her suckle a second time. And what she tasted seemed to her so sweet and delightful that she could not describe it in any way. And after she had suckled, the nipple of the breast from which the milk came, remained between the lips of the happy Clare; she took what remained in her mouth into her hands, and it seemed to be such pure shining gold that she saw her own reflection in it, as in a mirror.213

Catherine of Siena (1347-1380)214 Catherine wrote down her visions and her interpretations of Christian scripture, of which the first of the following excerpts from her 'dialogue' is based on the saying of Jesus, "Whosoever thirsteth, let him come to me and drink." It is offered here as a contrast to the further writings of Catherine focused on drinking.

ch. LIII "... And why did her say 'Let him come to me and drink'? Because whoever follows his doctrine, whether in the most perfect way or by dwelling in the life of common charity, finds to drink, tasting the fruit of the blood, through the union of the divine nature with the human nature. ch. LXXII "... But the soul who has in truth entered the house of self-knowledge, and by the exercise of perfect prayer has raised herself from the imperfect love of imperfect prayer, by the means of which I [the Father] speak to thee in this treatise on prayer, receives me, through affection of love, seeking to draw herself the milk of my sweetness from the breast of the doctrine of Christ crucified. ch. XCVI "... She receives the fruit of quietness of mind, a union with my sweet divine nature, where she tastes the milk, as when the child, who sleeps at peace on the breast of its mother, draws to itself milk by means of the flesh of its mother; so the soul, arrived at this last state, reposes on the breast of my divine charity, keeping in the mouth of holy desire the flesh of Christ crucified, ... So the soul reposes at the breast of Christ crucified, who is the Truth, and thus draws to herself the milk of virtue, in which she finds the life of grace, tasting in herself my divine nature, ... "Now look, sweet daughter, how sweet and glorious is this state, in which the soul has made so close a union with the breast of charity, that the mouth is not found without the breast, neither the breast without the milk. And so this soul does not find herself without Christ crucified or without me, the Eternal Father, whom she finds, tasting the supreme and Eternal Deity. ... "At this breast of love the memory fills itself, ... ch. CX "Now I will reply to that which thou didst ask me concerning the ministers of the holy Church ... And since one thing is better known by means of contrast with its contrary, I will show thee the dignity of those who use virtuously the treasure I have placed in their hands; and in this way thou wilt the better see the misery of those who to-day are suckled at the breast of my Spouse." Then this soul obediently contemplated the truth, in which she saw virtue resplendent in those who truly taste it. ... "Thou knowest that thou wentest one morning to church at sunrise to hear Mass, ... When the minister came to consecrate, thou raisedst thine eyes above his head while he was saying the words of consecration, and I manifested myself to thee, and thou didst see issue from my breast a light, like a ray from the sun, ... out of the midst of which light came a dove and hovered over the host, in virtue of the words which the minister was saying. ch. CXXXIX "... Wherefore his religion is a delightful garden, broad and joyous and fragrant, but the wretches who do not observe the order, but transgress its vows, have turned it into a desert and defiled it with their scanty virtue and light of science, though they are nourished at its breast.

Julian of Norwich (1342-1413+)215 Jesus is our true Mother in nature by our first Creation, and he is our true Mother in grace by his taking our created Nature. (15) The mother can give her child suck of her milk, but our precious Mother Jesus can feed us with himself, and does most courteously and most tenderly with the blessed sacrament, which is the precious food of true life. ... The mother can lay her child tenderly to her breast, but our tender Mother Jesus can lead us easily into his blessed breast through his sweet open side.(19)

Christian folklore From the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine (1229-1298) --the tale of seven women followers in the martyrdom of Saint Blaise in 287 ce Meanwhile the governor, seeing that he could not force the saint [Blaise] to worship idols, had him bound to a stake, and commanded that his flesh be torn with iron spikes; after which he was again led back to gaol. Seven women, however, followed the saint, and gathered up the drops of his blood. ... Then one of the women, who was the mother of two children, laid hold of the [pagan] robes and threw them into the fire. And her babes said to her: 'Dearest mother, do not leave us behind, but as thou hast plenished us with the sweetness of thy milk, so now fill us with the sweetness of the Kingdom of Heaven!' Then the [pagan] governor had them lashed to the stake, and the executioners laid open their flesh with iron points. But their flesh remained as white as snow, and from it milk spurted forth instead of blood.217

--the martyrdom of Saint Agatha in 253 ce On the morrow, the consul said to her: 'Renounce Christ and adore the gods!' Upon her refusal, he had her bound to a rack to be tortured. ... Enraged, the consul ordered that her breasts by roughly twisted, and then commanded that they be torn off. And Agatha cried: 'Cruel and impious tyrant, does it not shame thee to torture, in a woman, that with which thy mother suckled thee? But know that in my soul I have other breasts, whose milk sustains all of my senses, which I have long since dedicated to God!'218

--Saint Bernard [Bernard's mother] bore seven children, six children and one daughter, and dedicated all the sons to be monks, and the daughter to be a nun. For as soon as she had given birth to a child, she offered it to God with her own hands. Nor would she allow her children to be suckled at the breasts of other women, but imparted to them, with the maternal milk, the nature of their mother's virtue.219
The Shakers
Shaker theology is based on the idea of the dualism of God as male and female: "So God created him; male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27). This passage was interpreted as showing the dual nature of the Creator

An all-important, sublime, and foundational doctrine of the Shakers is the Existence of an Eternal Father and an Eternal Mother in Deity — the Heavenly Parents of all angelical and human beings.

31. As Father, God is the infinite Fountain of intelligence, and the Source of all power — "the Almighty, great and terrible in majesty;" "the high and lofty One, that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy, dwelling in the high and holy place;" and "a consuming fire."

32. But, as Mother, "God is love" and tenderness! If all the maternal affections of all the female or bearing spirits in animated nature were combined together, and then concentered in one individual human female, that person would be but as a type or image of our Eternal Heavenly Mother.

Fog and Error in the Gospel of Truth

Fog and Error in the Gospel of Truth

The Fog and Origin of "Error"

A Reading from the Gospel of Truth:

The gospel of truth is joy to those who have received from the Father of truth the gift of knowing him by the power of the Logos, who has come from the Pleroma and who is in the thought and the mind of the Father; he it is who is called "the Savior," since that is the name of the work which he must do for the redemption of those who have not known the Father. For the name of the gospel is the manifestation of hope, since that is the discovery of those who seek him, because the All sought him from whom it had come forth. You see, the All had been inside of him, that illimitable, inconceivable one, who is better than every thought.

This ignorance of the Father brought about terror and fear. And terror became dense like a fog, that no one was able to see. Because of this, error became strong. But it worked on its hylic substance vainly, because it did not know the truth. It was in a fashioned form while it was preparing, in power and in beauty, the equivalent of truth. This then, was not a humiliation for him, that illimitable, inconceivable one. For they were as nothing, this terror and this forgetfulness and this figure of falsehood, whereas this established truth is unchanging, unperturbed and completely beautiful.

For this reason, do not take error too seriously. Thus, since it had no root, it was in a fog as regards the Father, engaged in preparing works and forgetfulnesses and fears in order, by these means, to beguile those of the middle and to make them captive. The forgetfulness of error was not revealed. It did not become light beside the Father. Forgetfulness did not exist with the Father, although it existed because of him. What exists in him is knowledge, which was revealed so that forgetfulness might be destroyed and that they might know the Father, Since forgetfulness existed because they did not know the Father, if they then come to know the Father, from that moment on forgetfulness will cease to exist. (the Gospel of Truth)

Introduction
First we must not read preconceived ideas into the Gospel of Truth we must read it with a open bible and a open mind

Many scholars have cast doubt on claims that any mythological figures can be read into the text

Bentley Layton agrees that the Gospel of Truth "makes no specific reference to the Gnostic myth" (Layton 1987, p 250).

The first paragraph of the Gospel of Truth introduces the Father, the Savior, and the All, and then from there talks about the concept of fear terror and error being introduced into the world

The All
"because the All sought him (the Father) from whom it had come forth. You see, the All had been inside of him, that illimitable, inconceivable one, who is better than every thought." (the Gospel of Truth)

For more information on the Gnostic term the All see Panta En Pasin The All in All

The "All" comes from the Geek word pasin 3956. πᾶς pas pas; is an Adjective

Definitionall, every
Usageall, the whole, every kind of.

AV-all 748,

1) individually

1a) each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things, everything
2) collectively
2a) some of all types

The "all" is used collectively of the body of Christ the church, here in the Gospel of Truth I think the term is first used for the nation of Israel and secondly for the believers

The all is in a state of ignorance this is also a description of the nation of Israel at the time of Christ's first coming

As a result Error gained dominion and in futility produced a substitute for the Truth.

this would be describing the Pharisees hiding the keys to the kingdom of Heaven

the All errs in a fog of fear and anguish and cannot see the Father.

Ignorance
This is the one who is called the savior, since that is the name of the work that he must do for the redemption of those who have not known the father.

They call him “Savior.” That’s the name of the work he’ll do to redeem those who had become
ignorant of the Father.

The word Ignorance (Greek G52 ἄγνοια agnoia [ag-no-eh’-o which comes from the root 50 ἀγνοέω agnoeo [ag-no-eh’-o) means not to know, lack of knowledge, moral blindness [{Ac 3:17 } 3) to err or sin through mistake, to be wrong, spoken mildly of those who are not high handed or wilful transgressors [{Heb 5:2 }

Acts 17:30  True, God has overlooked the times of such ignorance, yet now he is telling mankind that they should all everywhere repent

Ignorance alienates from eternal life, and makes death the certain and irretrievable lot of the subject to it. Ephesians 4:18; Psalm 49:19-20 (Robert Roberts Christendom Astray)

Fog
"And terror became dense like a fog, that no one was able to see. Because of this, error became strong." (the Gospel of Truth)

Here there is no trace of a fall of an individual aeon but the process of the fall is set in motion by introducing a personification Plane or Error

Romans 1:21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God nor did they thank him, but they became empty-headed in their reasonings and their unintelligent heart became darkened.

Those who were wise among the Greeks and the barbarians have advanced to the powers which have come into being by way of imagination and vain thought. Those who have come from these, in accord with the mutual conflict and rebellious manner active in them, also spoke in a likely, arrogant and imaginary way concerning the things which they thought of as wisdom, although the likeness deceived them, since they thought that they had attained the truth, when they had (only) attained error. (The Tripartite Tractate)

2cor 3:14  But their mental powers were dulled. For to this present day the same veil remains unlifted at the reading of the old covenant, because it is done away with by means of Christ.

Ignorance produces negative emotional states such as "forgetfulness", "fear" and " terror these emotional states became solidified into matter when "the terror grew dense like a fog, so that no one could see"

but what is fog?

Particles of water floating in the air; they resemble very light rain. When warm humid air rises from the earth and cools to what is called the dew point, moisture condenses because cool air cannot hold as much water as warm air. If this occurs near the ground, it is called fog; if it takes place higher in the sky, it forms what is called a cloud. (Ps 135:7; Pr 25:14; Jer 10:13; 51:16) Moisture that condenses on cool objects, such as the ground or vegetation (usually at night), is described as dew. (Ex 16:13, 14; Jg 6:36-40; ) Mist, on the other hand, is composed of airborne particles of moisture that are somewhat larger in size than fog particles, but smaller than raindrops.

Note: Fog is denser than mist and tends to last longer.

From the start the Gospel of Truth is using figurative language it is therefore clear to see that the Gospel of Truth is not speaking about natural "fog" but is using the word "fog" as a analogy from the natural world.

The fog was that which beclouded the minds of the All which arose from the vain imaginations and traditions of their evil hearts

Fog--Lack of clear understanding between the carnal mind and the true spiritual understanding of the Father that is spiritual blindness. (Act 13:11 2Peter 1:9 2Peter 2:17)

Fog is therefore a symbol of the "fog" of false teaching and false religion.

A description of fog from the Gospel of Truth:

It’s something in a soul-endowed delusion (psychical form), like cold water sunk into loose earth. Those who see it think that it’s just earth. Afterwards, it dissolves again. If a breath draws it, it becomes warm.  Afterward, it evaporates if a breath of wind draws it, and it becomes warm. The cold aromas, then, are from division. For this reason, faith came and destroyed division and brought the warm fullness of love, so that the cold may not return, but the unity of perfect thought may prevail.

the term psychical form comes from the word psuchè (“soul, breath”), when it is related to psychros (“cold”), reminds us of a well-known etymological pun: the verb psuchô means “to blow” as much as “to breathe,” “to cool down” or “to get cold.”

In the Odes of Solomon fog is connected to thinking ability:

Ode 5:6. And they shall have no light to see that they may not take me.

7. May their thought become a thick-fog, and whatever they have planned-wisely [as they suppose] let it return upon their own heads

In Ode 5:7 "May their thought become a thick-fog" the Coptic has "power/ess"

The poet may mean "an earthborn mist" of pride, "swelling up" to obscure the sight of the oppressor. The Coptic perhaps substituted commonplace prose " [ulcerated and therefore] powerless." (Light on the Gospel: From an Ancient Poet by Edwin An. Abbott)

The role of the fog in the Gospel of Truth (Fog Coptic , Greek  ὅμιλος 3658) is used collectively as a collective noun (Note collective noun is a noun that is singular in form but refers to a group of people or things) and this is how the Greek word is used in Revelation 18:17

Rev 18:17  For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company <3658> in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,

Thayer's Greek Lexicon

ὅμιλος, ὁμιλου, ὁ (ὁμός, ὁμοῦ, and ἴλη a crowd, band (Curtius, § 660; Vanicek, p. 897; but Fick iii. 723 from root mil 'to be associated,' 'to love')), from Homer down, a multitude of men gathered together, a crowd, throng: Revelation 18:17 Rec.
STRONGS NT 3658a: ὁμίχλη ὁμίχλη, ὁμίχλης, ἡ (in Homer ὀιχλη), from ὀμιχέω to make water), a mist, fog: 2 Peter 2:17 G L T Tr WH. (Amos 4:13; Joel 2:2; Sir. 24:3; Wis. 2:4.)
Waters, Clouds peoples, and multitudes, and nations
Paul speaks about a great a cloud of witnesses in Hebrews 12:1 In Revelation John hears a voice as the sound of many waters Rev 1:15 we are told in Rev 17:15 that the waters are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. And in Rev 19:6, we are told the voice which had the sound of many waters is a great multitude of the Redeemed

Re 17:15  And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

Re 19:6  And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

Here we have two groups of waters the Redeemed cloud of witnesses Heb 12:1 Rev 1:15 19:6 and the Nations Rev 17:15 this will help us to understand the use of Fog in the Gospel of Truth

cloud of witnesses  3509. νέφος nephos [nef’-os]; apparently a primary word; a cloud: —  cloud. 1) a cloud, a large dense multitude, a throng

There are some scriptural uses of mist/fog, blindness and forgetfulnesses:

Rom 11:25  For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

2Peter 1:9  But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

(Note the things lacking are faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godly devotion, brotherly affection, and love see vss 5-8)

"He that lacketh these things is blind" — Greek. tuphlos 5185, literally "smoky, misty, darkened." (Cp. Rev. 3:17, where same word occurs.) His vision is clouded, he is shortsighted and cannot see the grand objective before him, nor the purpose of the knowledge of God. Thus he cannot see afar off. and "where there is no vision, the people perish" (Prov. 29:18).

5185. τυφλός tuphlos [toof-los’]; from, 5187; opaque (as if smoky), i.e. (by analogy) blind (physically or mentally): —  blind

5187. τυφόω tuphoo [toof-o’-o]; from a derivative of 5188; to envelop with smoke, i.e. (figuratively) to inflate with self-conceit: —  high-minded, be lifted up with pride, be proud.

"Hath forgotten" — [Greek,] "contracted forgetfulness," wilful and culpable obliviousness. Where there is no conscious striving to develop "the new man,"  a person soon forgets the privileged status that he has enjoyed in Christ.

Forgetfulness is linked to ignorance 3024. λήθη lethe [lay’-thay]; from 2990; forgetfulness: —  + forget.

2990 λανθάνω lanthano [lan-than’-o]   — be hid, to be hidden, to be hidden from one, be ignorant of, unawares.  without knowing

2Pe 2:17  These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.

2 Peter 2:17

These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved.
The false teachers are like the damp mists that blot out visibility (Mai. 4:2) without providing rain (cp. Deut. 32:2), and which are swept along by the tempest into the "blackness of darkness" (R.V.) for ever.

the mist of darkness or black darkness is
the spiritual darkness of the mind (Psa. 69:23). Psa. 69:23

2217. ζόφος zophos [dzof’-os]; akin to the base of 3509; gloom (as shrouding like a cloud): —  blackness, darkness, mist.

3509. νέφος nephos [nef’-os]; apparently a primary word; a cloud: —  cloud.
1) a cloud, a large dense multitude, a throng
Fog a Summary
Fog is an image for ignorance, forgetfulness and oblivion.- It is similar to sleep, blindness and darkness.
Fog a mental state of delusion resulting in spiritual blindness
the "fog" of false teaching and false religion.
Fog use as a collective of a group or community

And the ignorance of the Father brought anguish and terror, and the anguish grew dense like a fog so that no one could see. (the Gospel of Truth)

This "fog" results in the appearance of error or perhaps is error.
Error
"Where did it (the error) come from?" or "Where did the words of deception, which all the powers have failed to discover, come from?" (the apocalypse of adam)

the word Error is used in the Bible 2The 2:11  1John

1John 4:6 We are of God. He that knows God hears us. He who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error

Those who were out of step with the teaching of spirit-filled teachers like John were thereby discernible as of "the spirit of error". "Error" is more 'deceit' in the Greek, the same word used of the spirit of deceit which the Lord would send upon the Jewish world

2The 2:11 So that is why God lets an operation of error go to them, that they may get to believing the lie

just as God can work within the minds of believers according to His energeia by His Spirit (Eph. 1:19; 3:16-20), so those who refuse to believe have another spirit sent to work within them, deluding them into believing the lie. "The lie" refers to the "delusion"; and in the first century context, that delusion was the words of the Judaizers, framed as they are as the serpent in Eden and Cain who told the first lies (the same Greek word for "delusion" is used about the Judaizers who sought to delude the believers in Eph. 4:14; 2 Pet. 3:17; Jude 11 cp. Jn. 8:44).

John contrasts a love of the truth (cp. :10) with "the spirit of error [s.w. "delusion"]", which operated through the false Judaist prophets / teachers infiltrating the churches (1 Jn. 4:1,6).

Psychological confirmation of disbelievers is a feature of God's working with men (Is. 6:9,10; Rom. 1:24-28), and God even sends false prophets or teachers as part of this process (1 Kings 22:22,23; Ez. 14:9; Job 12:16). This is what will particularly happen in the last days (1 Tim. 4:1), just as it did in the collapse of Christian faith which was seen in the run up to the events of AD70

The word Error is also used in the Old Testament pseudepigrapha text of the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs

Reuben 1:1 The Testament of Reuben Concerning Thoughts (Roberts-Donaldson Translation)

2:1. And now hear me, my children, what things I saw concerning the seven spirits of deceit (Error), when 2 I repented. Seven spirits therefore are appointed against man, and they are the leaders in the works 3 of youth. [And seven other spirits are given to him at his creation, that through them should be 4 done every work of man. The first is the spirit of life, with which the constitution (of man) is 5 created. The second is the sense of sight, with which ariseth desire. The third is the sense of hearing, with which cometh teaching. The fourth is the sense of smell, with which tastes are given 6, 7 to draw air and breath. The fifth is the power of speech, with which cometh knowledge. The sixth is the sense of taste, with which cometh the eating of meats and drinks; and by it strength is 8 produced, for in food is the foundation of strength. The seventh is the power of procreation and 9 sexual intercourse, with which through love of pleasure sins enter in. Wherefore it is the last in order of creation, and the first in that of youth, because it is filled with ignorance, and leadeth the youth as a blind man to a pit, and as a beast to a precipice. (R. H. Charles Translation)

3. Besides all these, there is an eighth (8) spirit of sleep, with which is created entrancement of man's nature, and the image of death. With these spirits are mingled the spirits of error. The first (1), the spirit of fornication, dwelleth in the nature and in the senses; the second (2) spirit of insatiateness in the belly; the third (3) spirit of fighting in the liver and the gall. The fourth (4) is the spirit of fawning and trickery, that through over-officiousness a man may be fair in seeming. The fifth (5) is the spirit of arrogance, that a man may be stirred up and become high-minded. The sixth (6) is the spirit of lying, in perdition and in jealousy to feign words, and to conceal words from kindred and friends. The seventh (7) is the spirit of injustice, with which are theft and pilferings, that a man may work the desire of his heart; for injustice worketh together with the other spirits by means of craft. Besides all these, the spirit of sleep, the eighth (8) spirit, is conjoined with error and fantasy. And so perisheth every young man, darkening his mind from the truth, and not understanding the law of God, nor obeying the admonitions of his fathers, as befell me also in my youth.

The theme of the Testament of Reuben is about human thoughts (1:1) these thoughts and the mind in which they reside generate the decisions that result in sin and righteous conduct (See Reuben 3:12 4:6,8,11; 5:3,6,7; 6:1,2)

2:1 And seven other spirits are given to him at his creation, that through them should be done every work of man.

the seven other spirits given to human beings these spirits listed in Ruben 2:3-9 are said to be other spirits than the the seven spirits of error/deceit. except for the seventh one the power of procreation and sexual intercourse these other spirits are evaluated as beneficent powers working for human beings
the seven other spirits seem to refer to the human senses

Because of this, error  became strong. But she worked on her material substance vainly, because she did not know the truth. She assumed a fashioned figure while she was preparing, in power and in beauty, the substitute for truth.

The words "material substance" "hylic substance" or "its own matter" should be understood as a reference to Error equivalent of truth or substitute for truth which has a fashioned figure

The substance of Error is fog, fog or mist which is physically insubstantial has no real corporeal substance the fashioned figure it produces is an illusion a substitute for truth

1peter 1:14 As obedient children, quit being fashioned according to the desires YOU formerly had in YOUR ignorance,

the word "fashioned figure" or "fashioned form" refers to our mental atitiute to conform one’s self (i.e. one’s mind and character) to another’s pattern, (fashion one’s self according to)

12:2 And quit being fashioned after this system of things, but be transformed by making YOUR mind over, that YOU may prove to yourselves the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

For this reason, do not take error too seriously. Thus, since it had no root, it was in a fog as regards the Father, engaged in preparing works and forgetfulnesses and fears in order, by these means, to beguile those of the middle and to make them captive. (the Gospel of Truth)

Error happens, or exists, by terrifying and beguiling a group of people that is called ‘those of the middle

Error exists as long as it can beguile those of the middle. Error was, and still is, the cause and result of a false knowledge of the Father

‘those of the middle’ is a term that refers to people who have not yet come to knowledge, but who have the capacity for it.

This darkness of ignorance and error what is often called sin in the Orthodox Christianity

Error came into being in a fog, and that basically is a product of ignorance

Error and Fog exist together they may form a syzygy

Acquaintance is gnosis Un-acquaintance is a lack of gnosis or "deficiency" lack is destroyed by the advent of gnosis.

the terms "error" and "lack" are used interchangeably in the Gospel of Truth

error seems to be used in the Gospel of Truth as a synonym for the familiar Valentinian concept of "lack" or "deficiency" ( Greek: hysterema).

ignorance (Un-acquaintance) of the Father brought about Error through anxiety and fear

Error is not Sophia For example, later in the text error is linked to the crucifixion of Jesus (18:21-31). The text also speaks of error's destruction (26:15-32). This is at odds with any known Gnostic myth of Sophia, particularly a Valentinian one.

Error has a mental condition That which is untrue. Error thoughts represent belief in thoughts and beliefs not of God. Error thoughts have no foundation in Truth. They originate in the intellect. They are eliminated by one's denying their reality and power, and affirming the Truth of Being.

Error was, and still is, the cause and result of a false knowledge of the Father.

Speak of the truth with those who search for it, and (of) knowledge to those who have committed sin in their error.
