# The Four Luminaries in Sethian Cosmology: Harmozel, Oroiael, Daveithai, and Eleleth

In the cosmological teaching preserved in the Sethian Gnostic writings, four great luminaries—**Harmozel, Oroiael, Daveithai, and Eleleth**—stand as fundamental structures within the divine order. These beings are described as luminous aeons who surround the Self-Generated One (Autogenes) and organize the higher world into distinct realms of divine activity and spiritual development. They appear prominently in texts such as *The Apocryphon of John*, *Zostrianos*, *The Hypostasis of the Archons*, and *The Gospel of the Egyptians*.

The Four Lights are not merely angels but aeonic manifestations of the divine fullness. They govern heavenly regions, preserve spiritual knowledge, and oversee the different classes of humanity associated with the lineage of Seth. In some traditions a fifth light is also mentioned, which expands the structure into a group known as the **Five Lights**.

## The Four Lights as Aeonic Manifestations

The Sethian texts consistently describe the luminaries as emanations surrounding the Autogenes. The *Apocryphon of John* explains their origin directly from the divine light:

> “For from the light, which is the Christ (...) the four lights (appeared) from the divine Autogenes (...) the light-aeon Armozel, which is the first angel. (...)And the second light (is) Oriel. (...) And the third light is Daveithai. (...) And the fourth light Eleleth (...) These are the four lights which attend the divine Autogenes.” (Apocryphon of John)

This passage shows that the luminaries are not independent deities but extensions of the divine light proceeding from the Autogenes. Each light functions as an aeon, meaning a vast spiritual domain or living emanation of the divine order.

The Sethian text *Zostrianos* further explains the relationship between the luminaries and the Autogenes. Although the four lights are distinct beings, they also form part of a unified structure belonging to the fifth aeon:

> “The Autogenes is the chief archon of his own aeons and angels as his parts, for those who are the four individuals belong to him; they belong to the fifth aeon together. The fifth exists in one; the four [are] the fifth, part by part. But these [four] are complete individually...” (Zostrianos)

Here the luminaries are presented as individual aeons that together form a greater unity within the divine structure. They are both separate and collective expressions of the same divine light.

## The Four Lights as Light-Givers

The luminaries are also described as beings who bring illumination and knowledge. Because of this role they are sometimes called **Light-Givers**. In *The Hypostasis of the Archons*, Eleleth introduces himself to Norea and identifies himself as one of these lights:

> “Eleleth, the great angel, spoke to me. ‘It is I,’ he said, ‘who am understanding. I am one of the four light-givers…’” (Hypostasis of the Archons)

In this context the luminaries act as revelatory figures who disclose hidden knowledge to humanity. They intervene in the world to awaken those capable of receiving divine understanding.

The same text describes the appearance of Eleleth in striking terms that reflect the extraordinary radiance of these aeonic beings:

> “Now as for that angel (Eleleth), I cannot speak of his power: his appearance is like fine gold and his raiment is like snow. No, truly, my mouth cannot bear to speak of his power and the appearance of his face!” (Hypostasis of the Archons)

This description emphasizes the luminous and overwhelming nature of the divine lights.

## Harmozel: The First Luminary

The first and highest of the four luminaries is **Harmozel** (also spelled Armozel). He stands at the head of the aeonic structure and is closely associated with the primordial heavenly human known as Adamas.

The *Gospel of the Egyptians* describes Harmozel and the beings associated with his aeon:

> “and the (first) great light Harmozel, the place of the living Autogenes (...) and he who is with him, the incorruptible man Adamas” (Gospel of the Egyptians)

Harmozel therefore governs the first aeon, which is associated with the heavenly archetype of humanity. Adamas represents the incorruptible spiritual human, the perfect prototype from which the spiritual race originates.

The *Apocryphon of John* also places Harmozel over the first aeon:

> “And Pigera-Adamas... he (the One) placed over the first aeon with (...) the Autogenes, the Christ, by the first light Armozel (...).” (Apocryphon of John)

In Sethian cosmology this first aeon represents the highest form of spiritual existence. Harmozel therefore functions as the guardian of primordial humanity and the realm closest to the divine light.

## Oroiael: The Second Luminary

The second luminary is **Oroiael** (also spelled Oriel). His aeon is associated with Seth, the spiritual ancestor of the elect race in Sethian tradition.

The *Gospel of the Egyptians* describes this relationship clearly:

> “the second, Oroiael, the place of the great Seth, and Jesus” (Gospel of the Egyptians)

Oroiael therefore presides over the realm where Seth and those associated with him dwell. In Sethian thought, Seth represents the continuation of the spiritual lineage that descends from the primordial heavenly human.

The *Apocryphon of John* also describes the placement of Seth within this second aeon:

> “And he placed his son Seth over the second aeon in the presence of the second light Oriel.” (Apocryphon of John)

Through Oroiael the spiritual lineage of Seth is preserved and governed within the pleromatic structure.

## Daveithai: The Third Luminary

The third luminary is **Daveithai** (also written Davithe or Daveithe). This light governs the aeon associated with the descendants of Seth, often called the **seed of Seth**.

The *Gospel of the Egyptians* identifies this third region:

> “the third, Davithe, the place of the sons of the great Seth” (Gospel of the Egyptians)

These “sons of Seth” represent the spiritual race that carries the divine knowledge within the world.

The *Apocryphon of John* also describes this arrangement:

> “And in the third aeon the seed of Seth was placed over the third light Daveithai (...).” (Apocryphon of John)

Daveithai therefore governs the realm where the spiritual descendants of Seth exist and are preserved.

In Sethian thought this group represents those capable of receiving gnosis and returning to the divine realm.

## Eleleth: The Fourth Luminary

The fourth luminary is **Eleleth**, who appears prominently in several Sethian texts. His aeon is associated with those who have wandered in ignorance but later repent and return to the truth.

The *Apocryphon of John* explains the role of Eleleth in this process:

> “And in the fourth aeon the souls were placed of those who do not know the Pleroma and who did not repent at once, but who persisted for a while and repented afterwards; they are by the fourth light Eleleth.” (Apocryphon of John)

Eleleth therefore governs a realm connected with restoration and repentance.

In *The Hypostasis of the Archons*, Eleleth appears as a revelatory figure who explains the cosmic order and the destiny of the spiritual seed. He speaks about the future liberation of the sons of Seth:

> “‘Still, that sown element (the sons of Seth) will not become known now. Instead, after three generations it will come to be known, and it has freed them from the bondage of the authorities' error.’ Then I (Norea) said, ‘Sir, how much longer?’ He (Eleleth) said to me, ‘Until the moment when the true man, within a modeled form, reveals the existence of the spirit of truth, which the father has sent. Then he will teach them about everything, and he will anoint them with the unction of life eternal, given him from the undominated generation. Then they will be freed of blind thought, and they will trample underfoot death, which is of the authorities, and they will ascend into the limitless light where this sown element belongs.’” (Hypostasis of the Archons)

Here Eleleth acts as a messenger who reveals the future appearance of the revealer and the eventual liberation of the spiritual seed.

## The Fifth Light: Yoel

In some Sethian texts the structure expands beyond four lights to include a fifth luminous being named **Yoel**.

The *Gospel of the Egyptians* describes this fifth light and its special role:

> “the fifth, Yoel, who presides over the name of him to whom it will be granted to baptize with the holy baptism that surpasses the heaven, the incorruptible one.” (Gospel of the Egyptians)

The *Apocryphon of John* also refers to the group of lights collectively:

> “He sent, by means of the holy decree, the five lights down.” (Apocryphon of John)

This fifth light appears to function as a mediating or initiating figure associated with the heavenly baptism and the revelation of divine knowledge.

## The Four Lights and the Structure of Humanity

The luminaries also correspond to four different categories of human beings in Sethian anthropology.

The structure can be summarized as follows:

1. **Harmozel** – the realm of Adamas, the primordial heavenly human.
2. **Oroiael** – the realm of Seth.
3. **Daveithai** – the realm of the sons or seed of Seth.
4. **Eleleth** – the realm of repentant souls.

This structure represents both a cosmological and historical pattern. In some interpretations it corresponds to four ages of sacred history.

The text *Zostrianos* also describes the luminaries in terms of spiritual qualities associated with the highest type of souls:

> “[Armozel] is placed upon the first aeon. (He is) a promise of god, [...] of truth and a joining of soul. Oroiael, a power (and) seer of truth, is set over the second. Daveithe, a vision of knowledge, is set over the third. Eleleth, an eager desire and preparation for truth, is set over the fourth.” (Zostrianos)

In this interpretation the four lights represent stages of spiritual knowledge and preparation for return to the divine realm.

## Conclusion

Harmozel, Oroiael, Daveithai, and Eleleth form a central structure within Sethian cosmology. As luminous aeons surrounding the Autogenes, they organize the divine world into four great regions and oversee the spiritual destiny of humanity.

Harmozel governs the realm of the primordial heavenly human Adamas. Oroiael presides over Seth and the continuation of the spiritual lineage. Daveithai rules over the descendants of Seth who carry the divine seed. Eleleth oversees those who awaken from ignorance and return through repentance.

Together these luminaries represent both the structure of the pleromatic realm and the stages through which the spiritual race returns to the divine light. Through their guidance the hidden seed of Seth is preserved, awakened, and ultimately restored to the limitless light of the divine fullness.
