The Counterfeit Fathers and the Freedom of Nous
The Second Treatise of the Great Seth presents a radical reinterpretation of biblical history. Its argument is not merely that certain biblical figures misunderstood God, nor simply that the rulers of the biblical world were imperfect. Rather, the text presents the succession from Adam through the patriarchs, kings and prophets as belonging to a counterfeit order established through the Hebdomad.
Here the Hebdomad refers to the sevenfold celestial administration associated with the seven heavenly spheres. In the Enochian framework, these can be understood in relation to seven archangels or heavenly beings, while Gnostic cosmology presents corresponding planetary rulers as cosmic wardens. In texts such as the Apocryphon of John and On the Origin of the World, Yaldabaoth stands as the chief ruler of the lower cosmic order, accompanied by six other archons. Together they constitute the Hebdomad.
The importance of this sevenfold structure becomes particularly clear in the Great Seth, because the text repeatedly attributes the production of counterfeit humanity, counterfeit fathers, counterfeit prophets and counterfeit religious authority to the Hebdomad.
The central question therefore becomes: if Adam through John the Baptist belong to the counterfeit order, where is the genuine spiritual lineage?
The answer leads directly to Seth, the spiritual race, the Son of Man and ultimately the unknown Father.
The Sevenfold Hebdomad
The cosmological background can be represented through the following correspondence:

Within this framework, the Hebdomad is therefore not simply “seven angels” in an abstract sense. It represents the sevenfold cosmic administration through which the lower heavens govern the material world.
Yaldabaoth, occupying the highest position in this planetary hierarchy, becomes the chief architect of the counterfeit creation. His authority is nevertheless limited. He is not the transcendent Father. He is a ruler within the cosmic structure.
That distinction explains why the Great Seth repeatedly uses the language of counterfeit.
The Hebdomad can imitate what is above it, but it cannot reproduce the fullness of the higher reality.
It can make a counterfeit man.
It can establish counterfeit fathers.
It can produce counterfeit prophets.
It can imitate the Son of Man.
But it cannot become the true Father.
Adam: The Counterfeit Type of Man
The Second Treatise of the Great Seth begins its historical attack with Adam:
“For Adam was a laughingstock, since he was made a counterfeit type of man by the Hebdomad, as if he had become stronger than I and my brothers.”
This is one of the most important statements in the entire treatise.
Adam is not merely described as sinful. He is described as a “counterfeit type of man.”
The distinction is therefore ontological.
The Hebdomad has produced an imitation of humanity.
The implication is that genuine humanity exists at a higher spiritual level.
The statement continues:
“We are innocent with respect to him, since we have not sinned.”
The speaker therefore refuses identification with Adam's supposed guilt.
This is particularly important because the text is constructing two different humanities.
There is the humanity represented by the Hebdomadic Adam.
And there is the higher humanity represented by:
“I and my brothers.”
The speaker repeatedly identifies himself with this alternative spiritual race.
Adam may be the ancestor of the physical order, but he is not necessarily the ultimate ancestor of the spiritual human being.
The counterfeit Adam therefore establishes the first false genealogy.
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob: The Counterfeit Fathers
The attack becomes even more radical when the text reaches the patriarchs:
“And Abraham and Isaac and Jacob were a laughingstock, since they, the counterfeit fathers, were given a name by the Hebdomad, as if he had become stronger than I and my brothers.”
The expression “the counterfeit fathers” completely reverses conventional biblical genealogy.
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob normally establish the patriarchal identity of Israel.
Yet the Great Seth deliberately calls them counterfeit.
The point is not simply that they were bad men.
The text's argument is that their patriarchal authority belongs to the Hebdomadic order.
They have:
“been given a name by the Hebdomad”
The implication is that the Hebdomad attempts to establish its own genealogy and present it as the genuine one.
But the speaker rejects that genealogy:
“We are innocent with respect to him, since we have not sinned.”
The spiritual race is therefore not defined by descent from the counterfeit fathers.
This distinction between biological genealogy and spiritual genealogy is fundamental.
Abraham can be a physical patriarch without being the ultimate spiritual father.
Isaac can inherit Abraham's physical lineage without inheriting the fullness of spiritual knowledge.
Jacob can become the ancestor of Israel without becoming the Father of the spiritual race.
The counterfeit genealogy is therefore exposed as an imitation of the genuine spiritual lineage.
David and the Counterfeit Son of Man
The text next moves into Israel's royal tradition:
“David was a laughingstock in that his son was named the Son of Man, having been influenced by the Hebdomad, as if he had become stronger than I and the fellow members of my race.”
Again, the issue is imitation.
The Hebdomad does not merely produce an earthly king. It attempts to associate that earthly lineage with the title Son of Man.
The speaker rejects the claim.
The genuine Son of Man cannot simply be manufactured by royal genealogy.
This distinction is essential to the larger argument.
The Hebdomad can imitate spiritual titles, but imitation does not make something authentic.
A physical descendant of David does not thereby become the transcendent Son of Man.
The speaker again states:
“But we are innocent with respect to him; we have not sinned.”
The spiritual race remains separate from the counterfeit genealogy.
Solomon and the Counterfeit Christ
The next figure is Solomon:
“Solomon was a laughingstock, since he thought that he was Christ, having become vain through the Hebdomad, as if he had become stronger than I and my brothers.”
Solomon traditionally represents kingship, wisdom and temple authority.
But in the Great Seth, these associations become another example of the Hebdomad's counterfeit system.
Solomon:
“thought that he was Christ”
and had:
“become vain through the Hebdomad.”
The text therefore distinguishes between earthly religious authority and genuine divine revelation.
Solomon may possess royal status and wisdom within the earthly system, but that does not make him the genuine Christ.
The speaker concludes:
“But we are innocent with respect to him. I have not sinned.”
Again, the spiritual race is detached from the counterfeit succession.
The Twelve Prophets: Counterfeit Revelation
The critique then expands to the prophetic tradition:
“The 12 prophets were laughingstocks, since they have come forth as imitations of the true prophets.”
This phrase, “imitations of the true prophets,” reveals the central principle of the entire passage.
The problem is imitation.
The Hebdomad does not necessarily create something entirely unrelated to the higher reality. Instead, it produces copies.
The prophets:
“came into being as counterfeits through the Hebdomad”
and once again the text explains:
“as if he had become stronger than I and my brothers.”
The lower rulers therefore attempt to establish an alternative revelation.
The existence of prophecy does not automatically prove that the prophecy originates from the highest Father.
A revelation can exist within the lower cosmic administration while still being counterfeit in relation to the higher spiritual reality.
Moses and the “Friend”
Moses receives an especially interesting treatment:
“Moses, a faithful servant, was a laughingstock, having been named ‘the Friend,’ since they perversely bore witness concerning him who never knew me.”
The description:
“a faithful servant”
is significant.
The author does not simply erase Moses as a historical figure.
Instead, Moses occupies a role within the lower religious order.
The problem is that those who associated divine authority with him:
“perversely bore witness”
to something belonging to a reality they did not know.
The text then makes its chronological claim:
“Neither he nor those before him, from Adam to Moses and John the Baptist, none of them knew me nor my brothers.”
This statement encompasses virtually the entire biblical sequence.
Adam.
The patriarchs.
Moses.
The prophets.
John the Baptist.
All are placed on the same side of the divide.
They belong to the order that did not know the speaker or his brothers.
Adam to John the Baptist
The chronological sequence is therefore extraordinarily important.
It can be represented as:

This is not simply a criticism of individual biblical personalities.
It is a counter-history.
The author is redefining where authentic revelation comes from.
The biblical succession does not constitute the ultimate spiritual genealogy.
The genuine genealogy must be found elsewhere.
Angelic Doctrine and Bitter Slavery
The reason for this spiritual blindness is explained immediately:
“For they had a doctrine of angels to observe dietary laws and bitter slavery, since they never knew truth, nor will they know it.”
Here the Hebdomad is associated with religious regulation.
The problem is described as:
“bitter slavery”
This introduces the theme of freedom.
The lower cosmic rulers bind humanity through ignorance and religious obligation.
The human being believes that obedience to the cosmic rulers constitutes knowledge of the Father.
But the Great Seth reverses this assumption.
The rulers are not the ultimate Father.
Their laws do not constitute the fullness of truth.
The human being must escape their deception.
The Nous of Freedom
The climax comes with the remarkable statement:
“For there is a great deception upon their soul, making it impossible for them ever to find a Nous of freedom in order to know him, until they come to know the Son of Man.”
The expression “Nous of freedom” provides the key to the entire treatise.
Nous is the faculty of mind, understanding or spiritual intelligence through which higher reality can be recognised.
The problem is therefore not simply physical captivity.
It is intellectual and spiritual captivity.
The Hebdomad has imposed a false interpretation of reality upon humanity.
Human beings are deceived about:
their origin;
their ancestry;
their fathers;
their prophets;
their religious obligations;
their understanding of Christ;
and ultimately their relationship with the Father.
The liberation of Nous means breaking through that deception.
The Son of Man becomes the key because the text says that freedom becomes possible:
“until they come to know the Son of Man.”
Knowledge of the Son of Man therefore constitutes the turning point.
The Son does not simply provide another law.
He reveals the truth that allows the Nous to become free.
Seth and the Genuine Spiritual Race
This brings us to the central question: Who are the real fathers?
The answer cannot simply be another list of earthly patriarchs.
The Great Seth itself does not provide an alternative genealogy in which one earthly patriarch replaces Abraham, Isaac or Jacob.
Instead, it points toward a spiritual race.
This is where Seth becomes particularly significant.
The title of the work is the Second Treatise of the Great Seth. Within Sethian traditions, Seth represents the spiritual seed or authentic human lineage.
The contrast can therefore be expressed:
Hebdomad → counterfeit Adam → counterfeit fathers
versus:
Higher Father → Son → Seth and the spiritual race
Seth should therefore not simply be understood as “the good Adam.”
His significance is deeper.
He represents the authentic spiritual humanity that stands against the counterfeit humanity constructed by the lower rulers.
The true lineage is not ultimately established through fleshly descent.
It is established through spiritual identity and knowledge.
The True Father
The ultimate source of the genuine lineage is revealed in the final part of the passage:
“Now concerning my Father, I am he whom the world did not know”
This statement places the true Father above the entire Hebdomadic hierarchy.
The counterfeit fathers are earthly.
The true Father is transcendent.
The counterfeit fathers receive their names through the Hebdomad.
The true Father is the one:
“whom the world did not know.”
The Son's purpose is therefore revelation.
He reveals the Father hidden from the world.
The passage continues:
“and because of this, it (the world) rose up against me and my brothers.”
The conflict between the Son and the world is therefore ultimately a conflict between knowledge and ignorance.
The world belongs to the counterfeit order and therefore does not recognise the higher Father.
The Son and his brothers belong to the spiritual race and reveal an alternative origin.
The Threefold Structure of the Genuine Lineage
The argument can therefore be expressed through three levels.
The True Father
The transcendent Father stands beyond the Hebdomad.

The Son reveals the Father unknown to the world.

Seth and the Spiritual Race
Seth represents the authentic spiritual seed or genuine human lineage.
Against this stands the lower structure:

The two genealogies therefore run in opposite directions.
One is a genealogy of flesh, cosmic authority and imitation.
The other is a genealogy of spirit, revelation and knowledge.
The Real Fathers Are Not Another Group of Patriarchs
This is why the phrase “real fathers” needs to be understood carefully.
If Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are called:
“the counterfeit fathers”
the author does not necessarily intend the reader to replace them with another succession of biological patriarchs.
The deeper point is that fatherhood itself has been misunderstood.
The Hebdomad presents earthly patriarchs as fathers.
But the true Father is beyond the Hebdomad.
The genuine spiritual lineage therefore does not depend upon ordinary genealogy.
Seth becomes important because he represents the spiritual race, but even Seth is not the ultimate Father.
The ultimate Father is the transcendent source revealed by the Son.
Thus:
Adam is counterfeit man.
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are counterfeit fathers.
The genuine Father is the transcendent Father.
Seth represents the genuine spiritual race.
The Son of Man reveals the Father.
This produces a much more coherent interpretation of the text than simply creating another list of patriarchs.
The Counterfeit and the Genuine
The entire theology of the Great Seth can be organised around a series of oppositions:

The counterfeit is always an imitation of something higher.
The Hebdomad imitates divine authority.
Adam imitates genuine humanity.
The patriarchs imitate true fatherhood.
David's lineage imitates the Son of Man.
Solomon imitates Christ.
The twelve prophets imitate genuine prophets.
The religious system imitates divine revelation.
The entire lower order is therefore mimetic.
It copies what it cannot possess.
Freedom Through Recognition
The phrase “Nous of freedom” consequently becomes the centre of the entire argument.
The human being is not liberated merely by abandoning one religious institution and joining another.
Freedom occurs when the mind recognises the counterfeit for what it is.
The deception concerns identity.
The human being thinks:
I belong to Adam.
The Gnostic revelation says:
You belong to a higher spiritual race.
The human being thinks:
The patriarchs are my ultimate fathers.
The revelation says:
They are counterfeit fathers.
The human being thinks:
The cosmic rulers possess ultimate authority.
The revelation says:
They belong to the Hebdomad.
The human being thinks:
The religious law is the highest expression of divine truth.
The revelation says:
“they had a doctrine of angels to observe dietary laws and bitter slavery”
The human being therefore remains trapped until the Nous becomes free.
And the mechanism of that freedom is knowledge of the Son of Man.
Conclusion: The Counterfeit Fathers and the Freedom of Nous
The Second Treatise of the Great Seth presents an extraordinary alternative interpretation of biblical history.
Adam is explicitly described as:
“a counterfeit type of man by the Hebdomad”
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are:
“the counterfeit fathers”
David's son has been presented as:
“the Son of Man”
under the influence of the Hebdomad.
Solomon:
“thought that he was Christ”
while the twelve prophets are:
“imitations of the true prophets.”
Moses is:
“a faithful servant”
yet belongs to a system whose participants did not know the speaker or his brothers.
And the text ultimately declares:
“Neither he nor those before him, from Adam to Moses and John the Baptist, none of them knew me nor my brothers.”
The entire old succession is therefore presented as a counterfeit order.
Yet the purpose of this teaching is not simply destruction of the biblical past.
Its purpose is liberation.
The human being has been deceived by the Hebdomadic imitation of reality. The cosmic rulers have constructed an apparent genealogy, an apparent religious order and an apparent spiritual hierarchy.
But the genuine Father stands beyond them.
The Son reveals him.
Seth represents the authentic spiritual race.
And the human being must awaken to this higher identity through Nous.
The most important statement therefore remains:
“For there is a great deception upon their soul, making it impossible for them ever to find a Nous of freedom in order to know him, until they come to know the Son of Man.”
The Nous of freedom is the mind liberated from the counterfeit.
It is the capacity to recognise the difference between the apparent father and the true Father, between the counterfeit man and the genuine spiritual human, between imitation and reality, between cosmic slavery and transcendent freedom.
The genuine lineage is therefore not ultimately a list of alternative earthly patriarchs.
It is:
The transcendent Father → the Son of Man → Seth and the spiritual race.
Against this stands:
The Hebdomad → Yaldabaoth → counterfeit Adam → counterfeit fathers → counterfeit kings → counterfeit prophets.
The great reversal of the Great Seth is therefore that the people whom conventional genealogy presents as fathers are exposed as counterfeit fathers, while the people who belong to the higher spiritual race discover that their true Father was never located within the Hebdomad at all.
The Hebdomad can imitate.
It can rule.
It can deceive.
It can construct a counterfeit humanity.
But it cannot possess the ultimate Father.
The Son of Man comes to reveal what the world does not know:
“Now concerning my Father, I am he whom the world did not know”
And once the Father is known, the deception begins to collapse.
The counterfeit genealogy loses its authority.
The counterfeit fathers cease to define human identity.
The Nous becomes free.
And the spiritual race can finally recognise where it truly belongs.
