There are two states or kingdoms

There are two states or kingdoms

Common to the basic "Gnosis" is a form of dualism of the two worlds light and darkness, good and evil. the two worlds the present kingdom of men whose King is Sin or the kingdom of Satan and subject to corruption and death and the Kingdom of Heaven which is spread out over the earth.

18:36 Jesus answered: “My kingdom is no part of this world. If my kingdom were part of this world, my attendants would have fought that I should not be delivered up to the Jews. But, as it is, my kingdom is not from this source.

Joh 17:15  I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

Joh 17:16  They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

,the Kingdom of Heaven or the Kingdom of Father a spiritual kingdom made up of the believers

Thanking the Father who rendered you suitable for your participation in the inheritance of the holy ones in the light. He delivered us from the authority of the darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of his love.” (Col. 1:12, 13)

Thus they were transferred from under the authority of worldly darkness into the spiritual kingdom of God’s beloved Son

The following article is taken from Elpis Israel by Dr. John Thomas

Sin made flesh, whose character is revealed in the works of the flesh, is the Wicked One of the world. He is called by Jesus, the Prince of this world. Kosmos, rendered world in this phrase, signifies, that order of things constituted upon the basis of sin in the flesh, and called the kingdom of Satan (Matt. 12:26), as opposed to the kingdom of God: which is to be established upon the foundation of "the word made flesh" obedient unto death.

Incarnated sin, and incarnated obedience, are the bases of the two hostile kingdoms, of God and of the adversary. The world is Satan's kingdom; therefore it is, that "the saints", or people of God, both natural and spiritual Israel (Rom. 2:28,29; 9:6,7; John 1:47), are a dispersed and persecuted community.

Satan's kingdom is the kingdom of sin. It is a kingdom in which "sin reigns in the mortal body", and thus has dominion over men.

The kingdom of sin is among the living upon the earth; and it is called the kingdom of Satan, because "all the power of the enemy", or adversary, of God and His people, is concentrated and incarnated in it. It is a kingdom teeming with religion, or rather forms of superstition, all of which have sprung from the thinking of sinful flesh.

The kingdom of Satan is manifested under various phases. When the Word was embodied in sinful flesh, and dwelt among the Jews, the Kosmos was constituted of the Roman world, which was then based upon the institutions of paganism. After these were suppressed, the kingdom of the adversary assumed the Gothic domain, which was subsequently changed in the west to the Papal and Protestant order of things; and in the east to Islam. These phases, however, no more affect the nature of the kingdom than the changes of the moon alter its substance. The lord that dominates over them all from the days of Jesus to the present time is SIN, the incarnate accuser and adversary of the law of God, and therefore called "the Devil and Satan".

There are two states or kingdoms, in God's arrangements, which are distinguished by constitution. These are the Kingdom of Satan and the Kingdom of God. The citizens of the former are all sinners; the heirs of the latter are saints. Men cannot be born heirs by the will of the flesh; for natural birth confers no right to God's Kingdom. Men might be born sinners before they can become saints; even as one must be born a foreigner before he can be an adopted citizen of the States.

It is foolish to say that children are born holy, except in the sense of their being legitimate. None are born holy, but such as are born of the Spirit into the Kingdom of God. Children are born sinners or unclean, because they are born of sinful flesh; and "that which is born of the flesh is flesh", or sin. This is a misfortune, not a crime. They did not will to be born sinners. They have no choice in the case; for it is written, "The creature was made subject to the evil, not willingly, but by reason of him who subjected it in hope" (Rom. 8:20). Hence, the apostle says, "By Adam's disobedience the many were made sinners" (Rom. 5:19); that is, they were endowed with a nature like his, which had become unclean, as the result of disobedience; and by the constitution of the economy into which they were introduced by the will of the flesh, they were constituted transgressors before they were able to discern between right and wrong.

This is the constituted order of things. It is the constitution of the world; and as the world is sin's dominion, or the kingdom of the adversary, it is the constitution of the kingdom of sin.

What is Belial?

What is Belial?

Belial (Hebrew: בְּלִיַעַל‎) (also Belhor, Baalial, Beliar, Beliall, Beliel, Beliya'al) is a term occurring in the Hebrew Bible

Belial has a numerical value of 78 = 6 x 13.

01100. בליעל b@liya‘al bel-e-yah’- al; from 01097 and 03276; without profit, worthlessness; by extens. destruction, wickedness (often in connection with 0376, 0802, 01121, etc.): —  Belial, evil, naughty, ungodly (men), wicked. Greek 955.

01100 בליעל bᵉliya‘al bel-e-yah’- al

AV-Belial 16, wicked 5, ungodly 3, evil 1, naughty 1 ungodly men 1; 27

1) worthlessness

1a) worthless, good for nothing, unprofitable, base fellow
1b) wicked
1c) ruin, destruction (construct)

Deut 15:9 Watch out for yourself for fear a word of belial (worthlessness) should come to be in your heart, saying, ‘The seventh year, the year of the release, has come close,’ and your eye should indeed become ungenerous toward your poor brother, and you should give him nothing, and he has to call out to Jehovah against you, and it has become a sin on your part

a common understanding among the Jews that ‘Belial’ referred not to an external supernatural evil being, but to evil thoughts within the heart of men.

To have a ‘heart of Belial’ (a mean thought in one’s heart), was described as having ‘Belial in your heart’

Beware that there be not Belial in thy heart

In the Book of Jubileesuncircumcised Gentiles are called "sons of Belial". Jubilees 15:32

The quality or state of being useless, base, good for nothing. The Hebrew term is applied to ideas, words, and counsel (De 15:9; Ps 101:3; Na 1:11), to calamitous circumstances (Ps 41:8), and most frequently, to good-for-nothing men of the lowest sort— (De 13:13); (Jg 19:22-27; 20:13); (1Sa 2:12); (1Sa 25:17, 25); (2Sa 20:1; 22:5; 23:6; Ps 18:4); (2Ch 13:7); (1Ki 21:10, 13);

and men in general who stir up contention (Pr 6:12-14; 16:27; 19:28)

Any man or woman who was considered wicked, worthless, lawless, might be called a son or daughter of Belial. (See Deut. 13:13; Judg. 19:22; I Sam. 1:16, and II Sam. 16:7; in these texts "Belial" is used in the A. V.) .

Belial refers to the Adversary (Satan), or (in our interpretation) evil thoughts within the heart (consciousness) of men.

The deceiving phase of mind in men that has fixed ideas in opposition to the Truth. Belial assumes various forms in man's consciousness, among which may be mentioned egotism, a puffing up of the personality; and the opposite of this, self-deception, which admits the adversary into the consciousness. This adversary makes man believe that he is by nature good and without sin therefore man has no need of God.

Belial is Satan the "Devil," a state of mind formed by man's personal ideas of his power and completeness and sufficiency apart from God. Besides at times puffing up the personality, this thinking of the flesh often turns about and, after having tempted a believer to do evil, discourages the believer by accusing him of sin. Summed up, it is the state of mind in man that believes in its own sufficiency independent of the Deity.

By the time Bible writing resumed in the first century, “Belial was used as a personification
at 2 Corinthians 6:15 Further, what harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what portion does a faithful person have with an unbeliever?

"Belial" was a specifically Jewish term for 'satan'. The fact Paul uses it here demonstrates the degree of Judaist influence upon the Corinthians. The Bible doesn't teach the existence of a cosmic Satan figure as believed in by first century Judaism; the word "Belial" never occurs again in the Bible. But (as he often does) Paul reasons with them from their perspective.

It was unthinkable in Judaism to suggest that there was middle ground between Belial and God; but this in practice was how they were living. But when "Belial" occurs in the Old Testament, the Septuagint translates it as transgressor, impious, foolish or pest. It does not occur in the Septuagint as a proper name- i.e. 'Satan' as a personal cosmic being.

Belial in Hebrew means 'worthless', and it seems that it became personified in Jewish thought, eventually being twisted by them into a term for the cosmic 'Satan' figure which they came to wrongly believe in. So it could be that Paul is putting 'Belial' for what the Old Testament would call "sons of Belial", i.e. wicked men. They are then made parallel with "unbelievers", just as "Christ" is matched by "believers".

The term belial appears frequently in Jewish texts of the Second Temple period

And Manasseh turned aside his heart to serve Belial; for the angel of lawlessness, who is the ruler of this world, is Belial, whose name is Matanbuchus.— (Ascension of Isaiah 2:4

Levi tells his children to choose between the Law of God and the works of Belial Testament of the Twelve Patriarchs Levi 19:1

Naphtali (
2:6, 3:1) contrasts the Law and will of God with the purposes of Belial.

"Belial shall be let loose against Israel, as God spoke through Isaiah the prophet."
The Fragments also speak of "three nets of Belial" which are said to be fornication, wealth, and pollution of the sanctuary. CD 4:13 CD 4:17-18

Testament of Reuben

2:1 And now hear me, my children, what things I saw concerning the seven spirits of deceit, when I repented.
2:2 For seven spirits are established against man, and they are the sources of the deeds of youth.
2:3 And seven other spirits are given to man at creation, so that by them every human deed is done.

The spirits of deceit are to be understood as human qualities according to the outward seanes

14 The first is the spirit of life, with which the constitution of man is created.
15 The second is the sense of sight, with which ariseth desire.
16 The third is the sense of hearing, with which cometh teaching.
17 The fourth is the sense of smell, with which tastes are given to draw air and breath.
18 The fifth is the power of speech, with which cometh knowledge.
19 The sixth is the sense of taste, with which cometh the eating of meats and drinks; and by it strength is produced, for in food is the foundation. of strength.
20 The seventh is the power of procreation and sexual intercourse, with which through love of pleasure sins enter in.

The other seven spirits would be identified as the spirits of Belial these evil spirits are personified given specific names or as agents of Belial

8 For many hath fornication destroyed; because, though a man be old or noble, or rich or poor, he bringeth reproach upon himself with the sons of men and derision with Beliar.
9 For ye heard regarding Joseph how he guarded himself from a woman, and purged his thoughts from all fornication, and found favour in the sight of God and men.
10 For the Egyptian woman did many things unto him, and summoned magicians, and offered him love potions, but the purpose of his soul admitted no evil desire.
11 Therefore the God of your fathers delivered him from every evil and hidden death.
12 For if fornication overcomes not your mind, neither can Beliar overcome you.

8 But if it incline to the evil inclination, all its actions are in wickedness, and it driveth away the good, and cleaveth to the evil, and is ruled by Beliar; even though it work what is good, he perverteth it to evil.

What are Demons?

What are Demons?

'Demons', daemons, in the original New Testament Greek, refer to ideas or natural principles that underly civilization, like gravity and magnetism. Daemons, spirits in Latin, were often personified as gods. Venus, for example, personified love; Sophia, "theoretical knowledge" (226); Apollo, intellect; and Neptune, the power in the oceans.

By the fifth century, the relationship of daemons and spirits was overshadowed by the belief that demons and spirits, in a supernatural sense, ruled the world. Medieval art, and especially poetry like Dante's Infernal, completed the change in definition of daemons, from ideas to supernatural imagery, depicting hell fires and demons.

demon--This word is used in Matt. 8:28-34, when the demons ask to be sent into the swine. The demons of the parable represent error states of mind that have been quickened by Truth and are repentant. When one knows the work of Jesus in regenerating or reconstructing the mind and body and that this work is typical of what all have to do, one sees that negative thoughts have to be dealt with. One also understands that the demons or devils are error states of mind that have to be lifted up by the quickening power of Spirit.

demons, de'-mons (Gk.)-- As a rule the Bible usage refers to an evil spirit or unclean spirit; that is, a emotional feeling that dethrones the normal reason. This we can see from the book of Numbers 5:14

14 And the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled: (King James Bible)

the spirit of jealousy is a feeling of jealousy this can be seen from another translation

and if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impure--or if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impure (New International Version)

Jud 9:23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech: (King James Bible)

That is God let develop a bad attitude between Abimelech and the landowners of Shechem again this can be seen from another translation

23 God put bad feelings between Abimelech and the citizens of Shechem, who rebelled against Abimelech. (New International Version)

Demons, or evil spirits, are conditions of mind, or states of consciousness, that have been developed because the mental faculties of man has been used in an unwise or an ignorant way. If in thought or in word you are using your mental faculties in an ignorant way, you are bringing forth an ego or a personality of like character. The mind builds states of consciousness that become established in brain and body. Both good and evil are found in the unenlightened man, but in the new birth evil and all its works must be cast out. The work of every overcomer is to cast out of himself the demons of sin and evil, through the power and dominion of his indwelling Christ.

Obsessions, dual personalities, and all mental aberrations are the result of personal error thoughts' crystallizing around the will of man. This crystallization must be broken up with a focalized thought energy of greater power, such as is found in the Christ I AM. We are empowered by the name of Jesus Christ to "cast out demons" (Mark 16:17). To reach the place referred to as "my name," affirm your unity with the Christ I AM; then silently, or audibly if you are so moved, speak the word of rebuke directly to the false personality.

"Jesus rebuked him; and the demon went out of him" (Matt. 17:18). He "suffered not the demons to speak" (Mark 1:34). These texts mean that Jesus did not admit for a moment that demons have any power; nor did He allow them to affirm power, but with the "finger of God" (Luke 11:20) He cast them forth. He concentrated the dissolving power of Spirit upon them and their hold was broken.

The meaning of demons

  1. The following is an analysis showing that what was attributed to demon possession at the time of Jesus is today diagnosed in different terminology but involves the same symptoms. Jesus simply used the vernacular of the times:
DescriptionVernacular at the time of JesusDiagnosis Today
Matt. 12:22 "Then was brought unto him one possessed with a demon, blind and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.""possessed with a demonblind and dumb

It is Yahweh who makes blind and dumb not fallen angels

Ex 4:11  And Yahweh said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I Yahweh?

Mark 5:1-5 "No man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.""a man with an unclean spirit"insanity, schizophrenia?
Mark 9:17-27 "He teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away . . . and often times it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him.""hath a dumb spirit"epilepsy
Luke 13:11-17 "A woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.""spirit of infirmity"arthritis
See also John 10:20; Mark 3:21 where "he hath a demon and is mad" means "he is beside himself."
  2. Patients today with epilepsy and schizophrenia respond to medication However in New Testament times they were said to be possessed with demons. This is significant, for if indeed thillness were due to demon possession, as some suggest, how can the patient's recovery through medicine and therapy be explained? Can pills cast out demons?
  3. Although the narratives appear to indicate that the "spirits" cried out, it is clear that the vocalization of the sounds came from the demoniac. This is implied in the shift of pronouns in Mark 5:7, 9: "What have I to do with thee?"2 cf. "I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not." cf. "My name is Legion: for we are many."
  4. After the miraculous cure by Jesus, Legion is described as "clothed and in his right mind." (Mark 5:15). This implies that his affliction was insanity and not the influence of a fallen angel. (The request that the unclean spirits enter the swine is characteristic of some kinds of schizophrenics who fear the return of the insanity).

What is the Christ Consciousness?

What is the Christ Consciousness?

The Cambridge Dictionary defines consciousness as "the state of understanding and realizing something." The Oxford Living Dictionary defines consciousness as "The state of being aware of and responsive to one's surroundings.", "A person's awareness or perception of something."

https://www.gnosticdoctrine.com/2018/08/what-is-consciousness.html

Consciousness is thinking produced by the brain and it is related to the mind

The Greek word translated “conscience”, sun-eidesis, means literally a co-perception. It implies that there are two types of perception within the believer- human perception, and spiritual self perception.

What is the Christ Consciousness?

The Christ Consciousness is the spiritual man within us as " the hidden man of the heart...a meek and quiet spirit  1 Pet. 3:4. This confirms that this " man" is the personification of a spirit, or attitude of mind. Thus our real spiritual person is " hidden" . The world therefore cannot understand us, or be truly close to the believer who has the spiritual man utmost in their heart. The Gospel itself is a " mystery" ('something hidden'), yet this hidden mystery is the dynamic power in our " hidden man" of the Spirit. All that is hidden will be openly revealed in the Kingdom (Mt. 10:26). The inward man of Rom. 7:22 is what is so important; yet the LXX in Lev. 3:14-16 uses the same word to describe the fat surrounding the intestines, which God appeared to so value in the sacrifices. It was not that He wanted that fat in itself; but rather He saw that fat as representing a man's essential spirituality, that which is developed close to the heart, unseen by others, but revealed after death. (Duncan Heaster)

The real spiritual self which we are developing now will be revealed openly when the Lord comes, both to ourselves and also to our brethren. It is crucial to appreciate that God will not turn us into spiritual beings after the judgment seat. The spirituality which we now have will then be manifested in physical, bodily terms. This is why Rom. 8:11 encourages us that if we have this spiritual man within us, then " If the spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he...shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his spirit that (now) dwelleth in you" . Our life is now " hid with Christ in God" (Col. 3:3), and will be made manifest at his glorious appearing. Even after we die, our ‘spirit’, our essential spiritual personality, is still actively recollected by God (cp. Heb. 12:23). It is our spiritual man which is hidden; it is here called " our life" because it is the guarantee of our eternal life. What higher motivation could we require than to here and now develop the spirit of Christ? " Greater is he that is in you (i.e. your spiritual man, Christ Jesus), than he that is in the world" (1 Jn. 4:4). If the spiritual man is within us, we must surely win our spiritual conflict, ultimately! (Duncan Heaster)

Rom. 2:28 continues this theme of our real spiritual self being hidden, by saying that the true believer will " inwardly" (same word translated " hidden" in 1 Pet. 3:4) circumcise his heart. The works of the flesh are " manifest" , but by inference those of the Spirit are hidden (Gal. 5:18,19). Mt. 6:4,6,18 gives triple emphasis to the fact that God sees in secret. He alone truly and fully appreciates our spiritual self. This is sure comfort on the many occasions where our spirituality is misunderstood, both in the world and in the ecclesia. Yet it also provides an endless challenge; moment by moment, our true spiritual being is known by the Almighty, " Thou whose eyes in darkness see, and try the heart of man" . The spiritual man which God now knows (" sees" ) and relates to, will be what He sees at the day of judgment. God dwells in " secret" , i.e. in the hidden place, as well as seeing in " secret" . God is a God who hides Himself (Is. 57:17) due to human sinfulness. If we fail to see the spiritual man in our brethren, this must be due to a lack of real spiritual vision in us. It is human sin which is somehow getting in the way. (Duncan Heaster)

The Christ Consciousness is an equivalent expression for the Christ-self, spiritual self, new man, hidden man of the heart.

What is Grace

Grace

Grace the undeserved kindness of God

5485 xáris (a feminine noun meaning-, "“a favour freely done, without claim or expectation of return, leaning towards to share benefit,  – properly, Undeserved Kindness.

5485 (xáris) is used of God's favour – freely extended to give Himself away to people (because He is "always leaning toward them").

The word is often used to refer to a kind gift or a kind manner of giving. When referring to the undeserved kindness of God, the word describes a free gift given generously by God, with no expectation of repayment.

grace--Good will; favor; disposition to show mercy; aid from God in the process of regeneration. "By grace have ye been saved" (Eph. 2:5).

Conditional Grace

God’s grace has been offered to the entire human family. “For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men . . .” (Titus 2:11). This cannot mean that every soul will be saved. Such a conclusion would contradict numerous other passages.

What this does suggest is that God’s grace is potentially available to all who care to access it by means of the divine plan of redemption (cf. Romans 5:1; 6:3-4,17).

The receiving of God’s grace is conditional. Some Christians get this wrong asserts that grace is bestowed unconditionally by the sovereign will of God. The Bible negates this concept.

The principle is illustrated by the example of Noah, who “found grace in the eyes of Yahweh” (Genesis 6:8); and yet, as the writer of Hebrews shows, Noah and his family were saved by preparing an ark in obedience to God’s instruction (11:7; cf. Genesis 6:22). Yahweh proffered the grace. Noah, by faith, obeyed Yahweh, and so was blessed. While God extends grace, human beings must be willing to “receive” the favour (2 Corinthians 6:1).

Grace is conditional and requires something on our part: faith.

Justification– “A man is justified by faith” (Romans 3:28)
Sanctification– “sanctification by…faith in the truth.” (2 Thessalonians 2:13)
Glorification– “[Jesus will] present you before Him (God) holy and blameless and beyond reproach— if you indeed continue in the faith.” (Colossians 1:22)

The Grace/Knowledge Connection

1 Corinthians 1:4-7

4 I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus,
5 that you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge,
6 just as the witness about the Christ has been made firm among you,
7 so that YOU do not fall short in any gift at all, while YOU are eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ

Grace is expanded into "discourse and all knowledge,” v5 endowments with which the Corinthians were especially favoured

The access to God’s grace is by means of an objective body of revelation. Paul noted: “For the grace of God hath appeared . . . instructing us . . .” (Titus 2:11-12). Christianity is a taught religion. Isaiah, speaking of the kingdom age, proclaimed: “. . . he will teach us of his ways . . .” (2:3). Jesus himself declared: “It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard from the Father, and has learned, comes unto me” (John 6:45).

God’s grace is not dispensed apart from an instruction that requires both understanding and obedience. In these days when there is a tendency to “stampede” folks into the church, with little  comprehension of what they are doing, this is a crucial matter to emphasise.

Grace Is Not Earned
Grace excludes merit. We must constantly remind ourselves that humanity is not deserving of salvation. No one can “earn” pardon by works of human merit. If such were the case, we could boast regarding our redemption; however, that is impossible (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Even if one were able to perform everything God commands, he still must regard himself as an “unprofitable servant” (Luke 17:10). Jesus taught that our sins have put us head-over-heels in debt, and no person has the ability to liquidate that obligation (cf. Matthew 18:24-27).

When this concept is truly comprehend, service to Almighty God will flow with a freshness and zeal that invigorates the soul. Doubtless a failure to comprehend fully the true significance of grace is the reason many church members are spiritually inactive.

"Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ" (John 1:17); that is, the real saving, redeeming, transforming power came to man through the work that Jesus did in establishing for the race a new and higher consciousness in the earth. We can enter into this consciousness by faith in Him and by means of the inner spirit of the law that He taught and practiced.

The word “Serpent” its symbolic meaning

The word “Serpent” its symbolic meaning

God used the word “Serpent” to symbolize disobedience and sin of man (human flesh) resulting from the desire (lust) of man’s heart (thoughts - imaginations).

Again we appeal to the Bible, for by the Word of God truth is established.

It is recorded at John 3:14-15 the words of Jesus: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

Here we have a parallel drawn by Jesus, thus indicating the symbolism of the serpent. Because it was God who instructed Moses to make a “fiery serpent” and mount it on a pole, so Moses mounted a “serpent of brass” (Numbers 21:6-9). Thus signifying the method by which the serpent would be put to death (his head crushed) by the Seed of the woman (as prophesied in Genesis 3:15) brass signifying the flesh and serpent signifying the desires (lusts) of the flesh. So we see in the corpse of Jesus hanging on a tree (cross) the death of the devil (serpent) (Hebrews 3:14).

The actual putting to death “him who had power over death, the devil” was the life Jesus devoted to obedience to his Father, even to the death on the cross. This constituted the process of crushing the serpent’s head. Jesus accomplished this within himself, by his own choice, because it was his meat (desire) to perform the Father’s will (John 4:34).

When Jesus established the memorial table (Matthew 26:26; Mark 14:22;
Luke 22:19) he spoke only of his “body given” and his “blood shed”, in commemoration of his “death.” Paul in writing to the Corinthians, stated that this communion table is for the express purpose of “proclaiming the Lord’s DEATH until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:23-28). And Peter calls to mind the price paid for our redemption (1 Peter 1:18-19) is the DEATH of Jesus by his blood poured out.

So, in accordance with the Lord’s style of expressing his truth hid in a mystery, here we have an allegory. The Children of Israel, when wandering through the wilderness, were bitten by the little “fiery serpents” (because of disobedience and sins) which would result in death, unless and except they would (by faith) turn and look upon the “brazen serpent” hanging on a tree in order to be cured.

So, likewise, the saints (Spiritual Israel) who are confronted daily by sins - “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8) - as they wander through the wilderness of mortal life, will reap death unless they turn by faith and behold the man hanging on the cross, where the devil (serpent) has been put to death. And so are they healed (see 1 Peter 2:21-25).

Although Jesus put to death the ‘diabolos’ within himself by the life that he lived and the death that he died, the influence of sin is still at work. However, the saints will be justified in due time by the grace of God because of Jesus’ obedience.

Bible Symbols Decoded

Bible Symbols Decoded

Let's take a look at some of the bible symbols, so you may agree when you look up the chapter and verse, if you care to check it out.

The heavenly bodies are commonly used as denoting governments and leaders (see Ezek. 32:6-8; Isa. 1:1,10; Luke 21:25, etc.) SUN - The Throne of David - (Psalm 89 v 36) - which is the Throne of the Sun of Righteousness when he returns to the earth. MOON - The Moon Reflects the light of the SUN. The SUN is the Throne and the "Church" reflects light and power (like the moon does to the sun). The moon is the symbol of the Ecclesia Rev 12:1 STARS of heaven - Princes, rulers the saints who are the co-heirs with Christ. (it is a political symbol as can be seen from the U.S.A 50 stars on their flag, "STAR spangled banner" etc.)
HEAVENS - Political systems (above the mountains). MOUNTAIN - Government - (Micah 4 v 1). EARTH - Downtrodden people (oppressed and poor). EARTH-QUAKE - Great upheaval of the EARTH (as above). SEA - Restless, moving people who are not as oppressed and are free to move around (Psalm 65 v 6,7). WATERS - Peoples, multitudes, nations and tongues (languages) (Revelation 17 v 15). HORN - kingdom horns of the wild-ox; - Unique horns - "One Kingdom, without end" - God's Kingdom on Earth - coming soon. see Numbers 24:8

Numbers 24:8 GOD having brought him forth out of Egypt, The very horns of the buffalo, are his,--He shall eat up the nations his adversaries, And shall break their bones in pieces, And smite them through with his arrows. OLIVE - The "House of Israel" - (the people not country) FIG tree - Jews (Matt. 21 v 20), Christ cursing the unfruitful or unfaithful for ever in verse 19. DAY - Year in prophecy (Ezekiel 4 v 6) (Revelation 9 v 15). MONTH - 30 years in prophecy (Rev. 11 v 2,3 - 42 x 30 = 1260). SEVEN - The number of completeness in Scripture. You need to use discernment to see what is logical and sensible and whether the words are to be interpreted in their normal way or in God's symbolic language. A perfect example of this is when Christ said, "IF, you have enough faith and you say to this mountain, fall into the sea and it will (Matt. 21 v 21)", it clearly did not mean an actual mountain and the sea. It was symbolic language.

The mountain means government and restless dis-satisfied people are the sea.
Think about it. A mountain (that is a government) towers over and looks down upon the people (who are the sea) and the sea looks up at the mountain. The sea (people) cannot remove the mountain (government) without a tsunami. Now you can start to decode the Prophecies and understand them for your self.

What Is the Meaning of the Word “Soul”?

What Is This Thing Called “Soul”?

The English word comes from the Old English sawol, meaning the "intellectual and emotional part of a person.

The text from the nag hammadi libray The Exegesis on the Soul says "Wise men of old gave the soul a feminine name." This is true because the word soul is a Feminine Noun, in hebrew, Greek and Coptic

First when it comes to understanding the meaning of the word soul as used in the Bible we should look to the bible and Hebrew and Greek Lexicons of the old and new testaments for the interpretation

an article on wikipedia on the scriptural meaning of the soul says

The traditional concept of an immaterial and immortal soul distinct from the body was not found in Judaism before the Babylonian exile,[1] but developed as a result of interaction with Persian and Hellenistic philosophies.[2] Accordingly, the Hebrew word נֶ֫פֶשׁ‎, nephesh, although translated as "soul" in some older English Bibles, actually has a meaning closer to "living being". Nephesh was rendered in the Septuagint as ψυχή (psūchê), the Greek word for soul. The New Testament also uses the word ψυχή, but with the Hebrew meaning and not the Greek

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_in_the_Bible

The Lexicons define the Hebrew word Nephesh to mean: Breath, Soul, Spirit, Life, Mind etc. for these are its many uses in Hebrew. But the root meaning is breather. A soul is a breather literally.

In the N.T., "soul" is represented by the Greek psuche as the equivalent of the Hebrew nephesh. Of the 106 places where it occurs therein, in 45 places it is specifically said to be subject to death. In Matt. 6:25 where it is rendered "life", it is taught that from the soul spring the appetites of our present existence on earth. Both nephesh and psuche are derived from roots signifying to breathe; hence "a living soul" denotes a living, breathing creature.

The Scriptures give spirit, soul, and body as constituting all of man.

12 For the word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul [ ψυχή psykhḗand spirit [ πνεῦμα pneuma], and of joints and [their] marrow, and [is] able to discern thoughts and intentions of [the] heart (Hebrews 4). Compare Php 1:27; 1Th 5:23.

The “spirit” (Heb., ruach; Gr., pneuma) should not be confused with the “soul” (Heb., nephesh; Gr., psykhe´), for they refer to different things.

Paul the Apostle used ψυχή (psychē) and πνεῦμα (pneuma) specifically to distinguish between the Jewish notions of נפש (nephesh) and רוח ruah (spirit)

So the soul and the spirit are two different things, and the difference between them is explained by the bible.
The Nature of the Soul
The natural body of flesh and blood is referred to in the Greek as the body of the soul:

1cor 15:44 It is sown a body of the soul (literally in Greek - a soulical body) , it is raised a body of the spirit; if there is a body of the soul, there is also of the spirit:— 45 Thus, also, it is written—The first man, Adam, became, a living soul, the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46 Howbeit, not first, is the [body] of the spirit, but that, of the soul,—afterwards, that of the spirit. (Rotherham's Emphasized Bible)

The word nephesh, soul, denotes the body; elsewhere it relates to the life: "the life {nephesh — soul) is in the blood" (Lev. 17:11, 14).

Koehler and Baumgartner’s Lexicon in Veteris Testamenti Libros (Leiden, 1958, p. 627) defines it as: “the breathing substance, making man a[nd] animal living beings Gn 1, 20, the soul (strictly distinct from the greek notion of soul) the seat of which is the blood Gn 9, 4f Lv 17, 11 Dt 12, 23:

Gen 9:4 Only flesh with its soul—its blood—YOU must not eat (NWT)

The statement of this verse is literally true, for the bloodstream is the bearer of life throughout the body: a teaching of the Bible which science has confirmed. Blood was prohibited as an article of diet because it represented the life of the body which should be given up to God exclusively, as it is by self-sacrifice

Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. (King James Version)

The word for "life" is nephesh, which is from a root signifying to breach. It is literally true that the breath is the blood, for the blood stream conveys oxygen as well as nourishment to the various parts of the body, without which it would die.

When God "breathed into Adam the breath of life" he became a "living creature" (Gen. 2:7). He commenced to breath, and hence to live. Blood and breath are vital to human life, but Dot to divine nature, such as is promised to the redeemed in the age to come (2 Pet. 1:4). Hence Paul taught that "flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Cor. 15:50), though flesh energised by spirit will do so. Originally, the prohibition of blood rested upon all in covenant relationship with Yahweh, but not upon those who were outside of the covenant (Deut. 14:21).

Lev 17:11 For the soul of the flesh is in the blood, and I myself have put it upon the altar for YOU to make atonement for YOUR souls, because it is the blood that makes atonement by the soul [in it]. (NWT)

gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (King James Version)

7:22 of all that was on the dry land, all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, died. (New American Standard Bible)

[body + spirit = living soul]

The Genesis account shows that a living soul results from the combination of the earthly body with the breath of life. The expression “breath of the spirit of life" (Ge 7:22) indicates that it is by breathing air (with its oxygen) that the breath, or “spirit,” in all creatures, man and animals, is sustained.

Humans can kill human souls...

22 And in case men should struggle with each other and they really hurt a pregnant woman and her children do come out but no fatal accident occurs, he is to have damages imposed upon him without fail according to what the owner of the woman may lay upon him; and he must give it through the justices.
23 But if a fatal accident should occur, then you must give soul for soul,
24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 branding for branding, wound for wound, blow for blow (Exodus 21).

So there it is. A soul is a body. And a dead soul is a dead body.

Should A Woman Be Silent In The Church

Should A Woman Be Silent In The Church?
In the entire epistle of 1 Corinthians, whenever Paul quotes from and specially uses the term “law” (meaning written Scripture) he does so with specific intent, focus, and stylistic writing. For example, in 1 Cor. 9:8-9 Paul writes, “Does not the law also say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses: ‘You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.’” After referring to the law as saying something, Paul tells us that it is written and immediately quotes Deut 25:4 verbatim. Also in 1 Cor. 14:21 after Paul writes, “In the Law it is written” he immediately quotes from Isaiah 28:11-12. Again, in 1 Cor. 4:6 where Paul generally refers to Scripture he tells the Corinthians to learn through us the meaning of the saying “Do not go “beyond what is written.” In every case when Paul specially refers to Scripture, he says “it is written” (1 Cor. 1:19, 1:31, 2:9, 3:19, 10:7, 15:45) and consistently quotes from the Old Testament to prove his point. Here only does he not back up his reference by giving the law, how would a Berean follow Paul’s instruction if they search the scriptures to see if what law Paul is referring to? “Where is the law Paul, I am a Berean, show me!” Why would Paul suddenly change his consistent writing style in this verse only? Why doesn’t Paul even say “it is written” or even quote from the Old Testament so we have some idea what he is talking about as he has previously done in every instance throughout this epistle? Why? Either Paul was quoting a non-biblical source, such as a slogan or rabbinic saying or verses 34-35 represent an answer to a question that would justify an inconsistent verse with respect to the rest of his teachings. Possibility Paul was responding to a question and making a remark to which they would have a clear understanding. If not, then Paul was clearly inconsistent with his letters.

Silencing Women – Of God or Men?

There are 2 passages in the Bible which  appear to say that women should be silent in church.
1 Cor. 14:34-35  & 1 Tim. 2:11-12
A closer look shows that they are talking about different things and use a different Greek word for silence.
1 Corinthians 14:34-35 (KJV)
“ Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted to them tospeak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.”
Notice that it doesn’t just say that women can’t speak – even if they have a question they must ask their husbands at home. This implies that husbands are able to answer their wives spiritual questions.
Notice also that Paul appeals to the law, but he doesn’t say where he’s quoting from.
What’s also interesting is it seems to be the ONLY time Paul says he’s quoting the Old Testament, and he doesn’t back it up with the quote.
Let’s take a look at Paul’s normal writing style when he says he’s quoting scripture.
CITING QUOTES – (Thanks to Ian McHaffie for his research on this)
Paul introduces an Old Testament quote by “It is written” about 30 times and Includes full quote
Paul says “it says” or “the law says”  about 25 times and includes the quote.
Sometimes Paul just quotes with no introduction about 36 times
So that’s a total of 91 times where Paul gives the actual quote.
The only where he says he’s quoting scripture, but doesn’t say where, seems to be this verse .
It seems strange that if this is a weighty passage intended to stop women speaking for all time – that Paul doesn’t back it up with the exact scripture in the way he normally does. There’s another possibility. Corinthians was written to mostly Gentile believers living in a Roman city.  Maybe it’s Roman Law mentioned here.
ROMAN LAW
The word “law ”in 1 Cor. 14  can mean  any law whatever -not just the law of Moses.  For example Rom.3:27 “Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith – so here the word law refers to a law of works and a law of faith.  It’s possible the word Law in 1 Cor. 14  could be referring to yet another Law – the ROMAN LAW. Under Roman law a woman was subject to a man all her life.  The Romans had a law called Patria Potestas -power of a father – absolute authority – power over life and death.  When his daughter married this power could either go to her husband to have control over her, or stay with the father, whichever way, she was always controlled by a man.
But the traditional church argument has been that Paul is referring to Genesis and a Law that women must submit to men.  Let’s see if such a law exists.
GENESIS 3:16 is where the traditional argument takes us back to – the events in Eden.
“Thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.”
What is the context of this verse ?  It’s often been interpreted through Paul – but let’s think about it again realising that we don’t know if Paul was referring to it.
What happened in Eden was a breakdown of relationships, especially with God, and it lead to sin.  When Eve was tempted she didn’t turn to God, she turned to her husband.  It was a mistake to turn to her husband, she should have turned to God.
It’s also interesting that the term, “cursed”, arur, is absent from God’s announcement to Eve. The serpent is cursed above all the animals and punished, and because of Adam’s sin, the earth is cursed. But nothing is cursed, using the word ‘arur ‘because of Eve.
Let’s compare this verse in Gen. with Paul’s verse in Corinthian –
“Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.” Genesis 3:16
“They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as also the law says. If they want to learn something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.” 1 Cor. 14:34
Notice that The verse in Genesis isn’t a commandment, it’s a statement  -That men WILL rule over women – a prophecy. The verse in Cor. says that women MUST be submissive to men – this is a commandment to obey, two different things.
The question is – is Paul really referring to Genesis?
The traditional view is that Paul expanded what was said in Genesis, that he in fact gave it a different meaning than we would otherwise take from it.
But why would Paul appeal to the Law in this verse, when he says so many times we are no longer under the law?
LAW QUOTES
“Through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:2
“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.” Galatians 3:13
“If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” Galatians 5:18
This Law of sin and death that we are set free from goes back to Eden.  Paul is clearly referring to it and saying we are no longer under it – we still die, but if we are in Christ it doesn’t have a hold over us in a spiritual sense.
So what is this law that Paul is referring to?  It’s inconsistent to say we’re NOT under the law and then to enforce it in 1 Cor. 14. Could it just be the Roman Law?  Or could there be a fuller explanation?
When Jesus was tempted to take a passage of scripture at face value during his temptation in the wilderness, His response was to say “IT IS ALSO WRITTEN”. He considered the broader picture of what else the scriptures had to say.   So now I’d like to do the same.  Let’s think about the rest of the Bible and what it has to say about the silence of women.  Let’s start by looking at some women in the Old Testament.
The Bible provides examples of women who led, spoke out, and gave wise instruction to both men and women.
I’ve heard it said that men shouldn’t listen to women because Eve deceived Adam – more about that later- but we have  the  example of David hearkening to the voice Abigail and it was a good thing. She stopped him from sinning.   There’s the example of Deborah who judged and led Israel.
Esther who saved the nation by having the courage to speak out – A Jewish girl who married a foreign King at a time when other Jews were forcing men to divorce their foreign wives. (more about that in next post)
Huldah the prophetess  -The King and priests – the most important men in all the land – went to her to hear God’s word.
Miriam was chosen by God to lead Israel along with Moses and Aaron.
NO -There weren’t as many women as men in leadership roles but there’s enough to show they DID have God’s approval. I don’t believe it was God  who told women to be silent but the prophecy of male dominance taking effect.
RABBIS –Let’s  have a quick look at Jewish thinking by the time of Jesus and Paul.  As well as the Law of Moses they had all the interpretations of it by Rabbis known as the Mishnah and Talmud. These are some examples of what they said.
“Out of respect to the congregation, a woman should not herself read in the law.”
“It is a shame for a woman to let her voice be heard among men.”
“Even the sound of a woman’s voice is lustful.”
Josephus summed them up:
“Thus says the scripture, a woman is inferior to her husband in all things.”
So clearly these Rabbis thought women were inferior to men and made statements to say that the scriptures backed them up.  There’s definitely no scripture which says that a woman is inferior to her husband in all things –it was a story going around because of how the Rabbis re-interpreted scripture.
Let’s compare these sayings with what Jesus said.
WHAT JESUS SAID
“For you have one Teacher, and you are all brethren (includes male and female).  And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.  Nor are you to be called instructors (Rabbi, Master), for you have one Instructor, the Messiah.  The greatest among you will be your servant.”Matt. 23:9-11 NIV
So we are not to call anyone but Jesus our instructor or leader. It’s Jesus women turn to for ultimate guidance, not their husband, nor people who wrongly interpret scripture. Likewise it’s Jesus men should turn to, not their wives. Jesus is our leader.  How can women ask spiritual questions of their husbands at home if they don’t have a husband?
Let’s think about a woman with no husband. In John 4  Jesus broke the protocol of the day by talking to a woman alone. She had no husband to ask questions of.
The disciples left their nets to follow Jesus, but she left her water pot to go and preach.  She was the first person to be told by Jesus that He was the Messiah
She spoke to the people (including men), of the town and “many came to believe because of the words she spoke.
She was the FIRST to hear Jesus words and go out preaching the good news.
This was clearly an example of a woman preaching the good news of Jesus to men.  This woman grasped the message of Jesus and ran with it – she didn’t need a husband to know what the right thing to do was.
Jesus TRAVELLED WITH WOMEN we are told in Luke 8:2
He went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women.” Luke 8:2
After His resurrection He APPEARED FIRST TO A WOMAN & TOLD HER TO PROCLAIM HIS RESURRECTION – just as we should be doing now.
In John 20:17 Jesus said to Mary
“Go to my brethren, and say to them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the LORD, and that he had spoken these things unto her.”
We are told in Luke 24:11 that “It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.
But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.”
Mary became known as the “apostle to the apostles” because Jesus chose her to give the news of His resurrection to the other disciples.  We are told that the 11 men didn’t believe her.  We are also told that Jesus rebuked them sternly for this.
Mark 16:14  “Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven … he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen”.
Jesus wasn’t impressed when the men refused to believe these women who were proclaiming the resurrection, especially when they had been instructed by Jesus Himself to proclaim it.  This is a powerful point and warning to men who refuse to listen to women proclaim the gospel.
The  New Testament is full of examples of women preaching alongside  men.  Just a few examples here.
Acts 2 says ALL received the holy spirit, ALL spoke in tongues.”  This is what was spoken by Joel the prophet in chapter 2:
“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,  your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.”
It was an exciting time for the church – men and women were working together  to proclaim the gospel.
We are told that Phoebe (a woman) was a servant/deacon of the church in Cenchrea in Romans 16:1-2,  and that Priscilla and her husband Aquila were a preaching team “When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more accurately.” Acts 18:26, 1 Cor. 16:9
Priscilla and Aquilla taught Apollos, they are mentioned together about 5 times and usually it’s Priscilla who is mentioned first.   So in the New Testament  we hear of  women speaking and preaching together with men.
But what of the two difficult verses by Paul which seem to say at face value that women are to be silent???
CONTEXT
–Before we look at the quote in 1 Cor. 14 Let’s think about the context within the rest of 1 Corinthians.  Paul doesn’t expect women to be silent because –
1 Cor. 11  discusses what men and WOMEN will wear when PRAYING AND PROPHESYING– both spoken activities.
1 Cor. 14:5 says “I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy”.
1 Cor. 14:26 says “When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation.”
1 Cor.14:39 says Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy” (NIV)
In the IMMEDIATE CONTEXT  – Paul approved and encouraged both men and women speaking in the ecclesial meetings.
In the WIDER CONTEXT – Women spoke, judged, prophesied, led.
EXPLAINING 1 COR. 14:34-35
It seems to me that 1 Cor. 14:34-35 can’t be saying the opposite of what is established by the rest of the Bible.  Women did instruct and speak both in the Old Testament and New Testament WITH GOD’S APPROVAL.
The difficulty with 1 Cor. Is that Paul is answering a whole series of questions.  We have the answers but not the questions, nor the punctuation in the original Greek to make the questions stand out.  We know that all through 1 Cor. Paul is answering questions that have been written to him. 1 Cor. 7:1  makes this clear when Paul says Now for the matters you wrote about”.
I believe that the strongest explanation for this puzzling verse is that it’s actually Paul quoting one of these questions that he’s been asked .
1 Corinthians 14 is a QUOTATION of the matters they wrote about.
This is what it looks like if we put the words of Paul in italics
                                    QUOTATION  1 Cor. 14:34-35
Paul’s words – Italics
And the spirits of  prophets are subject to prophets. For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.”
“As in all the churches of the saintsthe women should keep silence in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says. If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is a shame for women to speak in  church”.(PART PAUL IS QUOTING THEY HAVE WRITTEN TO HIM ABOUT)
 What?
Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only ones it has reached?” (Paul dismisses the idea as nonsense)
I think this passage is the outcome of the Rabbis re-interpreting Genesis 3:16, something that was the thinking of the day, and is one of the “things you wrote about” which Paul refers to.
This theory makes sense of the strange exclamation of “What” at the start of verse 36 -It’s Paul’s dismissal of such an idea that women can’t speak. If we understand it like this, then Paul’s message takes on the opposite meaning to the traditional view. It’s dismissing the silly idea of women not being able to speak. Let’s look more closely at Paul’s dismissal of the idea.
If we understand that the passage is something quoted – then this response from Paul makes sense.  The problem verses would be a whole new teaching that contradicts Jesus.
Women to be silent and ask questions of their husbands? Paul challenges this new teaching with two questions.
  1. “Came the word out from you?”  – The word came out from Jesus not these men.
  2. “Came it unto you only?” “only” =  alone –  without a companion.  Were these men alone receiving a new teaching and not the women?
In Jesus women are “Sons of God”. Being male or female doesn’t matter, they are born of God’s will not men’s will, nor a husbands will.
“To all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” John 1:12
Let’s move on the Paul’s other difficult quote in 1st Timothy
What was Paul’s Purpose of Writing to Timothy?
Paul tells Timothy to stay in Ephesus – so that he could command certain people not to teach false doctrine.  So our setting is Ephesus in the 1st Century and there is a problem with wrong doctrine. Lets’ try and go back in time to ancient Ephesus, and try to understand the wrong doctrines that were in circulation.
ANCIENT EPHESUS –   Was the home of the Temple of Artemis – one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world.
Ephesus was the trade centre of the ancient world. It was a melting pot of myths.
Trying to understand these myths is useful when thinking about the problems that Paul is addressing in his letter to Timothy
Besides the cult of Artemis, there is evidence of various mystery religions, the practice of magic (Acts 19:19), worship of Egyptian gods as well as a large number of other gods.Legend has it that the city of Ephesus was founded by the Amazon women who also built the first temple to Artemis.  Ancient Statues of the Amazon women still exist. Artemis, according to Greek mythology, is one of the virgin goddesses who remained independent and free of any man. She is the Goddess of pregnant women and childbirth, Goddess of all animals and Goddess of the hunt.
Let’s think about the Amazon women who supposedly founded Ephesus.
AMAZON WOMEN – According to Greek mythology the Amazons were a nation of all female warriors who originated from Northern Turkey. They were skilled warriors who rode horses, enslaved men and forced them to build the city of Ephesus. They also worshipped Artemis.  By the time of Paul Artemis had merged into Diana of the Ephesians.
DIANA of the Ephesians
We know from Acts 18 that Diana was worshipped all over the Roman Empire, and this is confirmed by ancient coins which even call her “Saviour”. From Acts 19:27 we have the quote
“The goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world.”
She had many titles, one of them was PROTECTOR OF WOMEN IN CHILDBIRTH
The Roman Diana had evolved from the Greek One.  The idea of powerful independent women was reinforced in the Artemis cult because unlike other Greek goddesses, Artemis had no need of a male partner. Images of the Amazon women also lined her temple in Ephesus.
Philosophers, Myths -As we’ve seen Ephesus was a breeding ground for myths and also attracted philosophers.  Paul said –
“Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?  For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through thefoolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified.” 1 Cor. 1:20-25
Here in Ephesus the thinkers of the age came together.   There was a statue in the library in AD 117 where wisdom or Sophia was personified as a woman.
At some stage there were the Gnostic stories going around.  It’s hard to date the origin of the Gnostic stories as they evolved over time, but it seems likely that the ideas that fed them would have been present in Ephesus at the time of Pauls writings. This is one of the Gnostic texts which mentions Eve as the daughter of Sophia (Wisdom) who wakes Adam from sleep.
Myth – Eve made first (difficult to date the origins of these myths)
Sophia sent Zoe, her daughter, who is called “Eve,” as an instructor in order that she might raise up Adam, in whom there is no spiritual soul so that those whom he could beget might also become vessels of light. When Eve saw her companion, who was so much like her, in his cast down condition she pitied him, and she exclaimed: “Adam, live! Rise up upon the earth!” Immediately her words produced a result for when Adam rose up, right away he opened his eyes. When he saw her, he said: “You will be called ‘mother of the living’, because you are the one who gave me life.“  from ‘On the Origin of the World’
We’ll keep these ideas in mind while we look at Paul’s other difficult passage.
Paul’s other difficult passage
SILENCING WOMEN ?  1 Tim 2:11-15
“Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. And she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.”
At face value Paul appears to be silencing women because Adam was made first and wasn’t deceived like Eve was.  He appears to be giving Adam an elevated status and endorsing a MALE HIERARCHY.  Let’s see how these ideas compare to the teachings of Jesus.
Would Paul contradict Jesus?          What did Jesus say?
NO HIERARCHY
“Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah.  The greatest among you will be your servant.”
Matt.23:11“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,  and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.”  Mark 10:43
“Whoever does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.” Mark 3:35
ORDER DOESN’T MATTER
“But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” Matt. 19:30
Younger brothers chosen: Jacob not Esau, Isaac not Ishmael, Joseph ruler of older brothers, David the youngest son
WHAT PAUL APPEARS TO SAY
MALE HIERARCHY ?
“I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.” 1 Tim. 2:12
“They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.  If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.” 1 Cor. 14:34-35
“The head of the woman is man” 1 Cor. 11:3
DOES ORDER REALLY MATTER ?
“She must be quiet.  For Adam was formed first, then Eve.” 1 Tim 2:13
Conclusion – At face value – the words of Jesus and the words of Paul don’t seem to agree.
Let’s compare Paul’s words in here to some of his other words.
Would Paul contradict himself?
The question is – Would Paul really command all women to be silent when
he has encouraged them to speak?
1 Cor. 11  discusses what men and WOMEN will wear when PRAYING AND PROPHESYING– both spoken activities.
1 Cor. 14:5 – “I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy”.1 Cor. 14:26 – “When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation.”1 Cor.14:39Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy” (NIV)
Would Paul say order matters in one place when he said it doesn’t in another?
1 Cor. 11:11-12 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. And everything comes from God.”
Compared to
‘Women are to be silent for man was formed first.’
So once again – at face value – Paul’s words are very puzzling. Let’s think about Timothy the young man Paul is writing to.
Timothy’s Background
Paul begins his letter by saying –
“To Timothy, my dear son…
I thank God, whom I serve… I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” 2 Tim 1
Let’s compare this to our difficult passage
“I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.” 1 Tim. 2:12
Again the passages seem to clash.  Would Paul really silence Timothy’s mother and Grandmother? In 2 Timothy he commends them, he even seems to say that Timothy’s faith had been nurtured by his mother and grandmother. It would seem very much that they had in fact been teachers to Timothy
Let’s think about another part of the difficult Timothy Passage.
Verse 14
“And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.” 1 Tim 2:14
A misunderstanding of 1 Tim 2: 12  has caused  Eve to be blamed for the original sin which brought down mankind – yet Adam and Eve were together in the transgression.  Eve turned to Adam when she was deceived. Adam knowingly sinned.
It’s interesting that in Eden God had given the command not to eat of the tree of knowledge to Adam – before Eve was made.  It would seem that Eve was told about the command via Adam, and  what Eve told the serpent was not quite what God Told Adam.
After they ate the fruit it was Adam that God spoke to- the one given the original command from God.  Adam’s guilty verdict starts with “Because you listened to your wife,” which gives the impression that listening to his wife is his main misdoing;  this is NOT what it’s about at all.
The point of Adam listening to his wife was not about listening to a woman, and therefore all men should never listen to women- the point was  about  Adam messing up and disobeying the direct and  clear command from God.  Adam deliberately sinned by eating the fruit, he knew it was wrong and still did it anyway. Eve had been deceived by wrong doctrine, she wasn’t sure if it was wrong anymore.
Paul said repeatedly that is was ADAM who  brought sin into the world.
     IT IS ALSO WRITTEN
“For as in Adam all die”1 Cor. 15:22
“Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin”Rom. 5:12
It’s very likely that the church in Ephesus would have read Paul’s letters to the Romans and Corinthians Letters which stated that Sin came into the world by one man – Adam.  It’s very likely that the women were questioning whether Eve was part of the original sin of Adam.  In 1 Timothy Paul is emphasising that women were drawn into the transgression by being deceived, that is the point here – to correct wrong doctrine.  It seems likely that some women were saying that Eve was not part of Adam’s sin.
Different Greek words for silence
Next let’s compare our difficult verse in Cor. with our difficult verse in Timothy.
The translators have used the same English word “SILENCE” in these 2 passages.  But in Greek the  words are different with different meanings.  The word for silence in the Cor. passage means silence as we understand it – without sound.
But the word in the Timothy passage doesn’t necessarily mean to be without sound – It has more of a slant to meaning stillness, or behaving in a quiet way, or settling down.
COMPARE -So let’s compare our Timothy passage with another passage which uses the same word for silence – only this time the translators decided to call it quietness.
1 Timothy 2:11-15
“Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.  For Adam was formed first, then Eve.  And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.”
2 Thes. 3:11
“We hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread…14And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.”
So in this passage the same word takes on the meaning of quietness.  It’s the Greek word hesychia, it’s not the word sigan, “refrain from speaking”, used in 1 Corinthians 14  when speakers in tongues, prophets and the women are told to be silent. “Quiet” in verse 2 of the same chapter in Timothy means “free from disruption or persecution”, and it has been suggested that Paul meant the same in verse 11, i.e. that no attempt should be made to disrupt the process of a woman being taught.
Traditional Interpretation
Let’s compare the traditional interpretation with an alternative one
Traditional interpretation
Women are to be silent because Adam was made first. A universal rule from Paul to apply to all women for all time.
Alternative interpretation –
Deceived women teaching wrong doctrines are to stop teaching and learn in quietness. Advice for a local situation to women who still needed to learn and were leading others astray. Other women like Priscilla were ready to teach and  they did.
1 Tim 1   What was PAULS PURPOSE OF WRITING TO TIMOTHY?
1 Tim 1:3  says
“Stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies.”
NOTICE:  Paul’s command was only for ‘certain people’ – the ones teaching wrong doctrine.
FROM THE CONTEXT OF 1 TIM. 2 The Wrong Doctrines appear to be
– Doubts about Jesus being human
– Angry men
– Women overdressing
– EVE MADE FIRST and not part of Adam’s transgression
– HAVING CHILDREN WAS BAD or women hoped Diana would saved them in childbirth
Paul’s comments – Wrong Doctrines
I want to try to explain this passage by comparing what Paul is saying, to what appears to be the wrong doctrines  he’s referring to.
Remember that in chapter one Paul told Timothy to stop some of the people from teaching – the people to stop teaching were the ones spreading wrong doctrine.

“Stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer  or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies.”
Then in chapter two he goes on the say who those certain people are he is not allowing to teach – it is directed at a woman or perhaps a group of women.
I don’t allow a woman (with wrong doctrine – who is still following the myths and genealogies) to teach nor to “usurp authority”  (act of herself – independently of the men) but to learn quietly.
For Adam WAS formed first.  Remember we know that there were ideas circulating in the Gnostic writings that Eve woke Adam.  It’s not unreasonable to suppose that those ideas were forming at the time of Paul’s writings.  Paul is not saying
“Women must be silent because Adam was made first”
He’s saying that women with wrong doctrine must not teach and the fact is that Adam WAS made first, and that Eve WAS in the transgression.
Paul warned of those who claimed to have true knowledge but had a false knowledge (gnosis “Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge (gnosis)” 1Tim.6:20
WOMEN HAVING AUTHORITY
The Greek word for “AUTHORITY” that Paul uses in this verse is unique – it’s the only time it appears in the Bible.
1 Tim 2:12  “And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence (meaning quietness).”
Authority – authenteo –means “to act of oneself” a SELF WORKER
The  most common word used for authority in the New Testament is
– exousia– means power or authority – used 103 times
We know from the context of 1 Timothy that there were women in Ephesus who were trying to dominate but they were lead astray by wrong doctrine and still needed to learn. We know there was a culture in Ephesus of Diana worship  and of the worship of independent women who had once dominated men – according to myth.
Paul is saying that women with wrong doctrine were not to be self workers, not to be independent of the men.
It should also be noted that Paul is not saying that men can have authority over women or be  self workers – MEN  can’t work independently  of women – JUST AS WOMEN CAN’T WORK INDEPENDENTLY OF MEN.
Saved through childbearing?
What does Paul’s statement mean that women will be saved through childbearing?
I don’t believe this verse is saying that women are saved by the birth of Jesus.
It’s not saying “through the childbirth” there is no “the” in the Greek.  It is in the same sense of childbearing that he uses in chapter five.
1 Tim. 2:15  “And women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.”
1 Tim. 5:14  “So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander.”
Women are not saved by a different process  MEN AND WOMEN are saved by grace – by belief in God and Jesus.
But idle widows at Ephesus were being deceived by wrong doctrine (turning after Satan). Perhaps they were following the wrong teaching of abstaining from marriage.  Perhaps Paul suggested that marrying, having children and keeping busy would save them from being led astray as Eve had been by wrong teaching.
             Paul silences Men
Paul didn’t only silence women, he also silenced men.  He silenced anyone with WRONG DOCTRINE !
That’s the real point here.  It’s not a matter of gender – it’s a matter of stopping those who teach wrongly whether they are male or female.
Titus 1:10-14
SINNING PEOPLE (men included) DECEIVING  OTHERS WITH JEWISH FABLES TO BE SILENCED
For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake. One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, the Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;  Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
ANOTHER WOMAN WHO TAUGHT WRONG DOCTRINE
Rev 2:24 “Notwithstanding I have a few things against you, because you suffer that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed to idols….. But to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine and who have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you no other burden.”
POINTS
There was no other burden put on the men & women of Thyatira The only one told to be silent is the one with wrong doctrine.
Jezebel was not condemned for speaking – but for speaking wrongly, for turning after Satan.
Eve’s undoing was that she was deceived by wrong doctrine.  Adam’s undoing was his deliberate sin.
ADAM WAS GIVEN God’s word first – presumably Adam told it to Eve.  After the sin it was Adam who God confronted with the question Have you eaten from the tree that I COMMANDED YOU not to eat from?”Gen 3:11 God didn’t ask this question of Eve.
Adam sinned knowingly, he should have saved Eve when she was deceived.
JESUS -the second and greater Adam – didn’t give in to sin and died to save his bride. Being first didn’t make Adam better than Eve – he sinned.
Jesus the 2nd Adam is greater that the 1st Adam.  The fact that Adam was formed before Eve doesn’t make him greater.  Paul was more likely correcting wrong doctrine when he made the point that Adam was made first. Probably some were saying that Eve was made first.
MEN are GIVEN the SAME WARNING
2 Cor. 11:3  to both MEN AND WOMEN
“But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray”
So Paul warns MEN as well not to be deceived and fall into sin like Eve.
The point of the passage in Timothy about deception is DON’T MAKE EVE’S MISTAKE – don’t be deceived – turn to God not people
What about Paul’s advice to young widows? Is Paul’s giving  advice in a Local Context or making a rule for all women for all time?
1 Tim 5:14    “SI would have younger widows marry, bear children, rule their households”
            Compare this to
1 Cor. 7:8  ”Now to the unmarried and the widows
I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do.”
(Anna had been a young widow  – SHE DIDN’T HAVE TO MARRY AND HAVE CHILDREN. She spoke to “ALL (men and women) who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem”.)
Man as the Head –is  A symbol to show Christ’s relationship with the church… it’s a marriage symbol.  By not understanding this symbol some people have fallen into the “men domination women” relationship of Eden that Christ freed us from.  Man as the head is not about male domination but a relationship in marriage that echoes Jesus saving his bride.
MARRIAGE
THE WIFE- the church
She is presenting a picture of how believers submit to Christ.
THE HUSBAND -symbol of Christ. He is to love his wife as Christ loved the church.
Someone looking at a believing husband should be able to see a picture of how Christ loved the church.
JESUS & HIS BRIDE – He didn’t tell His bride to be silent – He told her to go into the whole world and preach the gospel
It is also written
We began by looking at 2 quotes that many people have taken at face value.
But Jesus didn’t just take verses at face value, He  also weighed up everything else that God had said.  So Jesus didn’t isolate verses  to mean something that was incompatible with the rest of scripture.
So when we see a verse that says “Women are to be silent for Adam was formed first”
We should also remember the verse that says that man also comes from woman and everything is from God, and the multitude of verses which encourage women to speak, pray, teach.
There is neither Jew nor Greek
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Gal . 3:28
PAUL’S FINAL COMMENT ABOUT TEACHING
“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”        “reliable people” = men & women
