Jesus Is a Hidden Name The Gospel of Philip

The Meaning of the Christ

Title: Understanding the Depth of Christ Consciousness

The Gospel of Philip sheds profound light on the significance of the names associated with Jesus and Christ, unraveling layers of meaning that extend beyond conventional understanding. While "Jesus" is recognized as a name, "Christ" embodies a deeper essence, transcending mere nomenclature. In essence, Jesus, the Nazarene, embodies the Christ Consciousness, representing an individual expression of the divine idea.

The intricate interplay of names and meanings becomes evident as we delve into the essence of each term. "Jesus," rooted in Hebrew, conveys the profound concept of redemption. "Nazarene," derived from "Nazara," symbolizes truth. Meanwhile, "Christ," originating from the Greek term for Messiah, embodies anointed teachings and divine wisdom.

Contrary to popular belief, "Christ" is not a surname but a manifestation of the divine idea in the form of Jesus, the Messiah. This concept is echoed in the Apostle Paul's writings, where he elucidates the metaphorical depiction of Christ as a body, with Jesus as the head and believers as the members. This mystical union emphasizes the inseparable bond between Jesus and his followers, constituting the body of Christ.

Furthermore, Paul's references highlight the transformative power of being "in Christ," signifying a new creation and a state of divine grace. This profound connection to Christ transcends mere doctrine, encapsulating a spiritual atmosphere in which believers live and act. Through baptism, individuals are clothed with Christ, becoming heirs to the promise of salvation.

The essence of Christ extends beyond a singular individual to encompass the divine-idea, embodying perfection in the Divine Mind. Christ represents the culmination of all divine attributes, including wisdom, love, and strength. Just as an architect's masterpiece encompasses a multitude of ideas, Christ embodies the fullness of divine perfection.

Central to understanding Christ is the concept of Christ Consciousness, which permeates the lives of believers. This spiritual awakening brings forth the realization of one's true self, indwelt by the essence of Christ. Through the quickening power of Truth, believers become vessels for the manifestation of Christ Consciousness in their lives.

However, many fail to recognize the proximity of Christ Consciousness due to a disconnect from their true selves. The birth of Christ Consciousness within an individual signifies the awakening to their spiritual identity, wherein the Christ of God is brought to consciousness.

In conclusion, the depth of Christ Consciousness transcends conventional understanding, encompassing the spiritual essence of Jesus, the Messiah. Rooted in divine wisdom and anointed teachings, Christ embodies the pinnacle of divine perfection. Through spiritual awakening, believers come to realize their innate connection to Christ, becoming vessels for the manifestation of Christ Consciousness in their lives. As individuals embrace their true selves, the transformative power of Christ Consciousness unfolds, illuminating the path to spiritual enlightenment and divine grace.

Jesus is a hidden name, Christ is an open one.

So Jesus is not a word in any tongue but a name they call him.

The messengers  who were before us had these names
for him: Jesus, the Nazorean, messiah,
that is, Jesus, the Nazorean, the Christ.

The last name is Christ,
the first is Jesus,
the middle name is the Nazarene.

Messiah has two meanings, both “Christ” and “measured.”
Jesus in Hebrew is “redemption.”
Nazara is “truth.”
Christ has been measured.

The Nazarene and Jesus are they who have been measured.

The Gospel of Philip

Most think of 'Christ' as Jesus' last name. Christ, however, is the Greek term for Messiah. Jesus, the Christ, is Jesus, the Messiah.

The word "Christ" signifies anointed. Anointing means designation to official position in God's arrangement. The Christ is the instrument or channel for the blessing of mankind. The Christ is composed of Jesus, the great and mighty head, and 144,000 members. (Revelation 7:4) Christ Jesus is the head and the church his body. We ofttimes hear the expression, a body of men with a general at their head. Of the Christ the apostle says: "And he [Christ Jesus] is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell." — Colossians 1:17-19.

The Apostle Paul uses a human body to illustrate the Christ, the great mystery class; the head representing Jesus, and the other members of the body those who are of his church. "For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular." — 1 Corinthians 12:12, 27.

Because we are members of his body and we are of his flesh and of his bones. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church

For as many as have been baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ ... ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and HEIRS according to the promise" (Gal. 3:26-29). A community of such individuals as these constitutes the mystical body of Christ

the term Christ refers to the anointed message that Jesus of Nazareth taught; i.e. Jesus' teachings. When Paul called the "Christ, the 'wisdom of God' in 1Co 1:24, he assumes that the Corinthians know that the divine Sophia [wisdom] has been reinterpreted as Christ,
In 1Th 5:18, Paul said, "the saving will [logic] of God is in Christ Jesus…this use of the phrase emphasizes…the cooperation of the Father as initiator and prime cause with the Son as agent/instrument."

What can be assumed here is that Jesus brings the will (logic) of God to man in his anointed teachings. (See Jn, Chapter 1)

"To be in Christ is to be a new creation [person] (2Co 5:17)…God has reconciled man with himself through Christ [i.e., through Jesus' anointed teachings]…. Christ is not an external principle of law or doctrine, but a life and a state in which and only in which the fullness of Christian grace and virtue and the love of God is possible. Hence this phrase 'in Christ' appears to designate the element or atmosphere in which the Christian lives and acts;

In Col 1:16f 'in Christ' designates Christ the wisdom/will of God in man

In short, We think of Christ not as Jesus, but rather as Jesus' wisdom, logos, Sophia, or simply, anointed teachings.

In himself Christ has everything, be it human or angel or mystery and the father.  The Gospel of Philip

Christ is the divine-idea. Jesus is the name that represents an individual expression of the Christ idea.

Christ is the one complete idea of perfection in the Divine Mind. He is the embodiment of all divine ideas, such as wisdom, life, love, substance, and strength. In the architect's mind there may be one masterpiece, but that masterpiece is the sum of all the beautiful ideas that have come to his mind. This Christ, or perfect idea existing eternally in the Divine mind is the true, spiritual, higher self of every believer. or the Christ Consciousness. Each of the true believers has been Anointed with the spirit of Christ thus each of the true believers has within them the Christ, just as Jesus had.

Some do not realize the nearness of this Christ Consciousness , because they have not found their real selves. which is Christ in you the hope of glory

The birth of the Christ Consciousness in the life of a believer is the bringing to consciousness of the spiritual idea of the Christ of God--through the quickening power of the word of Truth

we are renewed by knowledge” (Col. iii. 10). In this, however, he does not contradict himself, but rather makes the one phrase explanatory of the other; as if he had said, “we are renewed by the Holy Spirit through knowledge.” The Holy Spirit renews or regenerates man intellectually and morally by the truth believed. “Sanctify them by thy truth,” says Jesus; “thy word, O Father, is truth” (John xvii. 17). “Ye are clean,” said he to his apostles, “through the word which I have spoken to you” (John xv. 3). God’s power is manifested through means. His Spirit is His power by which He effects intellectual, moral, and physical results. When He wills to produce intellectual and moral effects, it is by knowledge revealed by His Spirit through the prophets and apostles. This knowledge becomes power when received into “good and honest hearts”; and because God is the author of it, it is styled “the Knowledge of God” (2 Pet. i. 2), or “the word of truth” (James i. 18), by which He begets sinners to Himself as His sons and daughters. “The word of the truth of the gospel,”” the gospel of the kingdom.” “the incorruptible seed,” “the word,” “the truth as it is in Jesus,”” the word of the kingdom,”” the word of reconciliation,” “the law and the testimony,” “the word of faith,” “the sword of the spirit which is the word of God,” “the word of Christ,” “the perfection of liberty,” etc.-are all phrases richly expressive of” the power of God” by which He saves His people from their sins, and translates them into the Hope of the kingdom and glory to which He invites them. The truth is the power that makes men free indeed (John viii. 32, 36). Hence Jesus says, “My words are spirit, and they are life.” The prophets, Jesus, and the apostles were the channels through which it was transmitted to mankind; and the spirit the agent by which the knowledge was conveyed to them. Hence, the knowledge or the truth being suggested to the prophets by the spirit is sometimes styled “the spirit” (Rom. ii. 20). The spirit is to the truth as cause and effect; and by a very common figure of speech, the one is put for the other in speaking of them relatively to the mind and heart of man. So that the phrase “renewed by the holy spirit” is equivalent to renewed by the belief of the truth testified by the Holy Spirit (John xv. 26: xiv. 13-14)

Anointing in the Gospel of Philip

Anointing in the Gospel of Philip

The anointing is superior to baptism, for it is from the word "anointing" that we have been called "Christians," certainly not because of the word "baptism". And it is because of the anointing that "the Christ" has his name. For the Father anointed the Son, and the Son anointed the apostles, and the apostles anointed us. He who has been anointed possesses everything. He possesses the resurrection, the light, the cross, the Holy Spirit. The Father gave him this in the bridal chamber; he merely accepted (the gift). The Father was in the Son and the Son in the Father. This is the Kingdom of Heaven. (Gospel of Philip)

anointing is a main area of interest in The Gospel of Philip. The number of ritual services in The Gospel of Philip is five. In verses 67.28-30 they are “a baptism and an anointing of oil and a eucharist and a redemption and a bridal chamber

GPh 67:27–30:“The Lord did everything like a mystery: baptism, chrism, Eucharist, redemption and bridal chamber.”

It is clear, however, that this text does not speak about “mysteries” in the sense of sacraments, but about the hidden, symbolic meaning of the Saviour’s deeds in the world. (Einar Thomassen)

Truth did not come into the world naked, but it came in types and images. The world cannot receive truth in any other way. There is a rebirth and an image of rebirth. It is necessary to be born again truly through the image. How is it with the resurrection and the image? Through the image it must rise. The bridal chamber and the image? Through the image one must enter the truth: this is the restoration.

anointing--A symbolic expression of the pouring out of the spirit on one who has faith in God

,anointing oil--pure oil of olives blessed by an elder. anointing oil is used in consecrating the body with the living Spirit of Christ. "But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face" (Matt. 6:17).

anointing with the spirit of Christ, The Christ consciousness, which is poured over a believer, making him holy or a perfect whole. " You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Christ. Rom 8:9

2 cor 1:20. Therefore also through him is the “Amen” [said] to God for glory through us. 21 But he who guarantees that YOU and we belong to Christ and he who has anointed us is God. 22 He has also put his seal upon us and has given us the token of what is to come, that is, the spirit, in our hearts.

1 John 2:27 27 And as for YOU, the anointing that YOU received from him remains in YOU, and YOU do not need anyone to be teaching YOU; but, as the anointing from him is teaching YOU about all things, and is true and is no lie, and just as it has taught YOU, remain in union with him

According to the Gospel of Philip, anointing is even more important than baptism:

The anointing is superior to baptism, for from the word “anointing” that we have been called “Christians,” certainly not because of the word “baptism.”  And it is because of the anointing that “the Christ” has his name…He who has been anointed possesses everything.  He possesses the resurrection, the light, the cross, the Holy Spirit.  (74:12-21.)

The anointing, a ritual anointing with sacred olive oil, was what allowed a believer to truly be termed a Christian and allowed those chosen to move past the world to an eventual resurrection.

However, it is from the olive tree that we got the anointing, and from the anointing, the resurrection.

Olive oil was generally used for anointing it consisted of pure oil of olives, and it must be blessed

although baptism is often seen as the major expression of a convert’s faith, Philip regarded it as far less important than the anointing—it is only with the anointing that a convert can truly be termed a Christian.  Receiving this title is the most immediate effect of anointing.

If somebody says: I am a Jew, nobody is going to move. If somebody says: I am a Roman, nobody will be confused either…But if I say: I am a Christian, everybody will tremble. May I obtain this sign…which the rulers will not be able to endure, that is, the name.

Notice that the name “Christian” (coming only after the anointing) is one that will make everyone tremble and the “rulers” “will not endure hearing.”

The fire is the anointing, the light is the fire.
The anointing oil was considered symbolic of the Light (Gospel of Philip 65:22-24, 67:2-8)

It is through water and fire that the whole place is purified - the visible by the visible, the hidden by the hidden. There are some things hidden through those visible. There is water within water, there is fire within the oil of anointing.

It is from water and fire and light that the son of the bridal chamber (came into being). The fire is the anointing, the light is the fire.

Through the Holy Spirit we are indeed begotten again, but we are begotten through Christ in the two. We are anointed through the Spirit. When we were begotten, we were united. None can see himself either in water or in a mirror without light. Nor again can you see in light without mirror or water. For this reason, it is fitting to baptise in the two, in the light and the water. Now the light is the anointing.

I believe the baptism and anointing happen at the same time or ceremony I think this is confirm from the above readings

In the Acts of Thomas, the anointing is the beginning of the baptismal ritual and essential to becoming a Christian, as it says "that the God whom thou preachest knoweth his own sheep by his seal" (Acts of Thomas Chapter 26)

and that the seal is received through the oil:

"And he commanded them to bring oil, that they might receive the seal by the oil." (Acts of Thomas Chapter 26)

Acts of Thomas 27 And the apostle arose and sealed them. And the Lord was revealed unto them by a voice, saying: Peace be unto you brethren. And they heard his voice only, but his likeness they saw not, for they had not yet received the added sealing of the seal (Syr. had not been baptized). And the apostle took the oil and poured it upon their heads and anointed and chrismed them, and began to say (Syr. And Judas went up and stood upon the edge of the cistern and poured oil upon their heads and said):
Come, thou holy name of the Christ that is above every name.
Come, thou power of the Most High, and the compassion that is perfect.
Come, gift (charism) of the Most High.
Come, compassionate mother.
Come, communion of the male.
Come, she that revealeth the hidden mysteries.
Come, mother of the seven houses, that thy rest may be in the eighth house.
Come, elder of the five members, mind, thought, refiection, consideration, reason; communicate with these young men.

Come, holy spirit, and cleanse their reins and their heart, and give them the added seal, in the name of the Father and Son and Holy Ghost. (Acts of Thomas Chapter 27)

In baptism and anointing, the person was sealed with the names Father, Son and Holy Spirit. As a result the person was not only considered a Christian, but a "Christ"

Those who receive the name of the father, son, and holy spirit and have accepted them must do this. If someone does not accept them, the name will also be taken from that person. A person receives them in the chrism with the oil of the power of the cross. The apostles called this power the right and the left. This person is no longer a Christian but is Christ.

"Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit…You must be born again." (John 3:5-7)

The new life that allows us to start out with God comes through a spiritual birth provided by the Holy Spirit. "Unless one is born of…the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." Just as man must be physically born into the human family, so man must be spiritually born into God's family. There is no other option. That is why Jesus said, "You must be born again."

The reason spiritual new birth is a necessity is because "that which is born of the flesh is flesh." Natural human birth can only produce a natural life. Becoming a child of God involves a supernatural life that God alone can provide.

it is only after the anointing that one becomes “Christian” in the fullest sense of the word. The ritual anointing established, for its receiver, direct communication from the Holy Spirit and the convert becomes a christ, an “anointed” member of God’s kingdom.

The Gospel of Philip teaches that a person only becomes a Christian by the Anointing not baptism. It is only with the receiver of the anointing that a follower of Jesus can truly be called a Christian.

The Anointing is the seal or confirmation that a believer is a Christian

Becoming Christians according to the Gospel of Philip

How to become a Christian according to the Gospel of Philip

How does a person become a Christian according to the Gospel of Philip? We well answer this question below but first we will look at the meaning of the name Christian

The Name “Christian”

The word christian is used three times in the New Testament (Ac 11:26, Acts 26:28; 1Peter 4:16It was first Antioch in Syrian that Christ’s followers became known as Christians.

5546. Χριστιανός Christianos [khris-tee-an-os’]; from 5547; a Christian, i.e. the exponents of Christ: —  Christian.

— Gr. christianous: "Christ-like; Christ-ones." the Bible shows that it was a God-given name; they "were divinely called first in Antioch Christians" (Young’sit confirmed their identity (Acts 26:28; 1Peter 4:16).

In the Greek Septuagintchristos was used to translate the Hebrew מָשִׁיחַ (Mašíaḥ, messiah), meaning "[one who is] anointed.

Acts 11:26  And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. (KJV)

The word rendered "called" is chrematisai, defined by Strong as "to utter an oracle, i.e., divinely intimate; by impl. to constitute a firm for business; (gen.) to bear as a title." The word is rendered "warned from God" in ch. 10:22.

The NWT and Young’s Literal Translation specify that God was involed with the court megerstes using  the name “Christian”

Acts 11:26 and having found him, he brought him to Antioch, and it came to pass that they a whole year did assemble together in the assembly, and taught a great multitude, the disciples also were divinely called first in Antioch Christians. (Young’s Literal Translation)

Acts 11:26 and, after he found him, he brought him to Antioch. It thus came about that for a whole year they gathered together with them in the congregation and taught quite a crowd, and it was first in Antioch that the disciples were by divine providence called Christians.
(NWT)

From this we can see that the name christian was divinely appointed

The earliest occurrences of the term in non-Christian literature include Josephus, referring to "the tribe of Christians, so named from him;" ( Josephus. "Antiquities of the Jews — XVIII, 3:3".)

Pliny the Younger in correspondence with Trajan; and Tacitus, writing near the end of the 1st century. In the Annals he relates that "by vulgar appellation [they were] commonly called Christians" (Tacitus, Cornelius; Murphy, Arthur (1836). The works of Cornelius Tacitus: with an essay on his life and genius, notes, supplements, &c. Thomas Wardle. p. 287.) and identifies Christians as Nero's scapegoats for the Great Fire of Rome. ( Bruce, Frederick Fyvie (1988). The Book of the Acts. Eerdmans. p. 228.)

We next see the word appear in other early Christian sources in Ignatius, Eph 11.2; Rom 3.2; Pol 7.3. Cf. too Did 12.4; MPol 3.1; 10.1; 12.1-2; EpDiog 1.1; 4.6; 5.1;

This brings us to the gospel of philip a lost christian text found in 1948 it has been classified as a Valentinian document the word Christian is used ten times in the Gospel of Philip the first few paragraphs in the Gospel of Philip make a distinction between a Hebrew and a Christian this is carried on later in the text which we will look at now

I am a Christian

If you say, “I am a Jew,” no one will be moved. If you say, “I am a Roman,” no one will be disturbed. If you say, “I am a Greek, barbarian, slave, free,” no one will be troubled. If you say, “I am a Christian,” the [world] will be shaken. May I [receive the one] whose name the [world] cannot bear to hear. (Gospel of Philip)

If you say, “I am a Jew,” no one will be moved. If you say, “I am a Roman,” no one will be disturbed.

no one will be disturbed because the world loves its own

The Gentile symbolizes the material, the Jew symbolizes soulical and the Christian typifies the spiritual  .

If you say, "I am a Christian," the world will tremble

This passage reflects a period when Christians had begun to be persecute for the name at any rate they are thought of as standing apart from other people

In the early years of the church from the 1st century until the 4th century AD Christianity was still a new and unknown faith. it was viewed with suspicion by many and internally Christianity was full of divisions with a huge variety of sects calling themselves christian. Greek Romam Barbarian and jew are fundamentally ethnic categories whereas Christians could come from any race nationality or culture from slaves or free men and women.

The Anointing
The anointing is superior to baptism, for it is from the word "anointing" that we have been called "Christians," certainly not because of the word "baptism". And it is because of the anointing that "the Christ" has his name. For the Father anointed the Son, and the Son anointed the apostles, and the apostles anointed us. He who has been anointed possesses everything.

Although baptism is often seen as the major expression of a convert’s faith, the Gospel of Philip regarded it as far less important than the anointing—it is only with the anointing that a convert can truly be termed a Christian. Receiving this title is the most immediate effect of anointing.

Notice that the name “Christian” (coming only after the anointing) is one that will make everyone "tremble.”

"And it is because of the anointing that "the Christ" has his name." Jesus was anointed at his baptism with holy spirit and power ()

The verb xplw and the name Christ occur in association in 2 Corinthians 1:21.

Segelberg (193) compares Theophilus ad Autol. i. 12, where it is said that we are called Christians because we are anointed with the oil of God. Tertullian (de Bapt. 7) also derives the name of Christ from the chrism (c£ Iren. Dem. 53; Froidevaux 114 n. 8).

For the Father anointed the Son, and the Son anointed the apostles [giving them the “power to become sons”], and the apostles anointed us [and still do to this day by the written Word].

"He who has been anointed possesses everything." is joint heir with Christ being joined together in union by the fellowship of the spirit

The anointing with literal oil is only symbolic of the anointing of the holy spirit. The anointing with the spirit appears to happen at the same time as the baptism:

Anyone who goes down into the water and comes up without receiving anything and says, “I am a Christian,” has borrowed the name. But one who receives the holy spirit has the name as a gift. A gift does not have to be paid back, but what is borrowed must be paid. This is how it is with us, when one of us experiences a mystery. (Gospel of Philip)

a definite going down and coming up, that is, it was not a baptism of sprinkling only.'

it is a baptism of full submersion in water

"he has borrowed the name at interest" his sin debt has not yet been forgiven (paid) and is accruing interest - this is what the christo-pagan community is all about.

it appears that at the same time a person goes down into the water they receive the holy spirit:

We are anointed through the spirit

"But one who receives the holy spirit has the name as a gift"
The name of course is the "Christian" name the holy spirit is the anointing

no longer a Christian but is a Christ
We are born again through the holy spirit, and we are conceived through Christ in baptism with two elements. We are anointed through the spirit, and when we were conceived, we were united. No one can see oneself in the water or in a mirror without light, nor can you see yourself in the light without water or a mirror. So it is necessary to baptize with two elements, light and water, and light is chrism.(Gospel of Philip)

to be born again by the holy spirit is to receive the name christian.to be conceived by Christ is to become Christ

(Gospel of Philip)

receiving the name christian is only the beginning of the journey the end goal is to be come a Christ

People cannot see anything that really is without becoming like it. It is not so with people in the world, who see the sun without becoming the sun and see the sky and earth and everything else without becoming them.

Rather, in the realm of truth,
you have seen things there and have become those things,
you have seen the spirit and have become spirit,
you have seen Christ and have become Christ,
you have seen the [father] and will become father.
[Here] in the world you see everything but do not [see] yourself, but there in that realm you see yourself, and you will [become] what you see.

A Christian is a person who has been anointed with holy spirit

Christian means Christ-like; Christ-ones
A Christian as both Father and Mother
